i swear that a good chunk of anti jedi discourse and feeling boils down to ‘a monastic lifestyle does not appeal to me, therefore it’s bad and needs to be destroyed’

like buddy. pal. let me let you in on a secret. you can find a lifestyle unappealing without that lifestyle being bad (never mind ‘actively harmful’). a lifestyle can be a bad fit for certain personality types or whatever without that lifestyle being inherently and irreperably unsalvageable for anyone ever. there are allowed to be things that you simply do not vibe with. there is no such thing as One Size Fits All, particularly when it comes to religion and philosophy and religious practice.

‘but why doesn’t that attitude then apply to the sith’ because the sith lifestyle is actively harmful! by design! because its philosophy is quite literally that of adolf hitler! there is nothing to be salvaged from ethnonationalists, from fascists!

(and, honestly. as pseudo-monastic traditions go, the jedi are incredibly open/of the world. there are few if any truly closed traditions that we see, either in the movies or in the EU. never mind fuckin. actual hermits living in the kashyyk shadowlands up mountains.)

I’m Jewish, dealt with anti-semitism, and I vibe with the Sith code. It wasn’t written by Nazis, it’s just fictional, and it’s pretty broad and easy to take what you want from it. I think it’s a big and unfair stretch to call people Hitler supporters for liking a fictional wizard society motto 

it wasn’t written by n-zis, no, it was written by david gaider, who has gone on the record to say that the sith’s philosophy as expanded on in kotor and which has since been folded into the larger eu was in parts based on mein kampf

So, yeah. That’s where the Code of the Sith came from (reverse the Jedi Code— done!). And the Sith philosophy (at least what I wrote of it for Korriban) was inspired by Mein Kampf at least in parts (which made the forumites who talked about how awesome it was, and how it made sense, one part hilarious and one part frightening).

i have called people many things for finding boilerplate fash ideology ‘empowering’, but not h-tler supporters. that’s an accusation the cult of nuance came up with all on their own.

i realise that i’m coming at this with the questionable benefit of a metric ton of spoilers, care of the eternal discourse that rages across my dashboard, but it really is unnerving to actually look at tcw!mandalorian society and see, far more than anywhere else in the gffa, a uniform race of white blue-eyed blondes.

even the Death Watch, the ‘true mandalorians’, are no exception to this. (almost?) every other human settlement we see has more variation in its makeup. it’s sinister, in the same manner as the hugo boss uniforms of the Empire - and all the more so for the proof that it is the result of ‘exile’ of ‘violent segments of society’, of a violence on the part of satine and her supporters that doesn’t make for such appealing massmarket media but which is violence of a kind, none the less.

it’s also weird as shit, to me, to come into tcw and suddenly mandalorians are all aryan. i’ve always been incredibly Casual when it comes to ce star war, but to me, ‘mandalorian’ was always inescapably tied to boba fett - who, it was revealed in the pt, is a man of colour. my first thought, at the word ‘mandalorian’, isn’t the aryan asshole up there, or the other aryan asshole on mandalore’s throne, or any other white blond blue-eyed twit the narrative tries to tell me is mandalorian. it’s boba, and his father, jango. mandalorians, to me, were never white. seeing almost-retconned like this is... weird.

(of course, there’s issues then with the setting up of the mandalorians as antagonistic and untrustworthy and violent and, simultaneously, a people of colour. but erasing those same people and making the mandalorians an aryan nation instead is hardly any better...)

I once saw an Empire fan claim that Red Sith are coded as Chinese or Far Eastern. They also tried to call them victims. What do you think? I'm white, but I personally see better real life parallels in Twi'leks if you want to talk about non whites being oppressed.

well one gets exactly nowhere before one starts regurgitating white supremacist nonsense with a star war flavouring. if red sith are anything-coded they are aryans, with korriban as their thule. people in the empire (and in fandom, for that matter) who buy into their nonsense about genetic superiority and/or oppression are, well, idiots by and large but also coming out with the same crap that st-rmfront and the like buy into. doubly so if they turn around and start crying about how sith are oppressed.

like. yeah. they were conquered and colonised by the jen’jidai. over three thousand years ago, at the beginning of swtor. it was a long ass time ago. i (a welsh person, whose own language and culture has been on the wrong end of multiple colonisers - the romans, the vikings, the english, mostly the fucking english) might as well still be complaining about the conquest of the romans, and it’d still be more recent than that of the sith.

the sith, by the time of swtor era? they’re not victims, and they’re not oppressed, by even the longest of shots. they’re the ones who do the oppressing. they’d be the equivalent of modern italian facists who use the burning of rome to justify their own racism. (nb: do not know if such a position in italian politics exists, and frankly do not wish to).

there are aliens in swtor and star war generally who are minority-coded. the twi’leks, the evocii, the sand people, jawas, iridonians/zabrak. but the sith? ain’t one of them.

edit: incidentally this is why i get so goddamn mad when people use ‘stolen children’ plotlines - lifted most frequently from the experiences of jewish children/families in and following ww2, though it’s happened to other minorities/at other times as well - for a people who are literally space aryans. seriously.
