New Job Smell
“Hey, dude, wake up.”
A beam of sunlight reached a sliver out through the curtain, bolting straight to Sirius’ matte face.
“Christ-shit-”
Sirius stumbled off of the couched, flailing in surprise from the sudden light source in his eyes. Landing on the floor, he groaned in slight annoyance.
“What the fuck time is it?”
“It’s morning, roomie. How’d you sleep on the couch?”
Sirius took a moment to get up off of the floor, brushing off some stray lint and dirt from the floor.
“I slept alright. Not as comfy as a bed but it’s good enough” Sirius mumbled as he walked past RL, to the fridge. Inspecting inside, he found mostly empty drawers and a few takeout leftovers, alongside a emptier looking carton of cranberry juice. Picking it up, he gestured towards it in RL’s direction.
“Do you mind?”
“Go ahead.”
Sirius unscrewed the top of the carton, drinking and emptying out the last of the cranberry juice. He felt a little less groggy, the juice giving him a small enough sugar kick to start his day. He closed the carton after compressing it, throwing it in the garbage on his way out.
“Hey, uh, do you know how the buses work around here? I didn’t really get the chance to grab the bus schedule yesterday and I gotta figure out how to get to work”
RL scrunched his eyebrows, almost surprised at Sirius’ lack of acquaintance with the near universally known way that New Yorkers get around. However, his face did soften, understanding the cognitive disconnect he might have.
“…Dude, you’re in New York, the subway’s gonna be the closest thing to a bus system you’re gonna get around here.”
“Do you have a schedule for the subway then? It’s like 8:15 and I gotta be there in like an hour and a half if I’m gonna get the tour.”
RL gave Sirius a deadpan look, matching Sirius’ blank stare for a moment.
“Just…take a Lyft today man. Best case scenario, I can show you when you get back. I’ve got a half shift today, so I should be back at 4.” RL sighed out, walking to the door and grabbing his bag on the way out. He grabbed his keys, closing the door on the way out.
“Hey, before I go, you gonna be good man?”
Sirius; already sinking into the couch and setting up his Lyft; looked up, a look of being a little caught off guard on his face.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine. Thanks for asking?”
RL nodded, closing the door behind him.
Sirius checked his phone again, and the Lyft was ready and waiting for him, set up to pick him up and drop him off on time at the building. He gathered his chargers, his headphones and his laptop from his duffel bag and headed downstairs to meet the driver, passing a couple people on his way down. There wasn’t much to them, as he was kind of in a hurry and honestly didn’t have enough time to strike up a conversation. Passing through the lobby, one of the guards waved to him, a friendly smile on their face. He waved back, getting into the Lyft quickly before it took off.
This job, from how his friend put it, would be a nice break from active duty, and something to get him used to civilian life as opposed to being on the front lines almost 24/7. It was certainly a tall order, as Sirius had never actually experienced civilian life.
"It'll be fine, my guy. It's smooth sailing from here on out." He said.
Sirius felt a twinge of positivity remembering that. He had a job and a place, a better start than he expected.
The Lyft stopped to let him out at a small office building, briefly exchanging thank yous.
The room was on the top 5th floor, but his friend was already there at the door to meet him. A tall, muscular man with oaken brown skin with a bright smile and piercing green eyes stood holding the door open, clearly excited.
"Marcus! Hope I didn't keep you waiting!"
"Ey, Sirius! How you doin buddy?" Marcus exclaimed as he pulled Sirius into a hug with a couple pats. The brotherhood between them was palpable, the embrace warm and genuine shining through their grins.
"Ready to start my first day at work man. Lead the way."
Walking through the building to the top floor, Marcus gave Sirius the rundown of what his job would be from Day 1.
"So here, we usually build computer or server rigs for commission. Most of our clients are people just getting their business off the ground, so they just need smaller servers, something that can fit in the corner of the room. Other times, we get orders for full gaming rigs, with all the bells and whistles they can afford. Now, your job is a little different. You're not building these rigs, what you would be doing is more or less repairing them when they come in. You'll get your own office, and once they ship in, we'll bring the rigs to you. Once you run a quick diagnostic, just let us know if it needs any parts, and I'll give you the company card to buy em. Once you have it ready to go, we'll send em back, and you're good to go! Any questions?"
"Yeah, how often do I paid?"
"Uh, bi-monthly usually. We're a small operation, but with the large amount of clients we have coming in, we can take care of everyone in the office. Worst case scenario, comes in a few days late, but at that point we'll make sure you're well taken care of."
"How much will I get paid?"
"More or less $20,000 a year, probably more if we can get more clients. Today was just the orientation, but you'll be paid for today."
Marcus led Sirius to his office. It wasn't the roomiest, but there was enough space to work a rig or two.
Sirius felt around the desk, then turned to give Marcus a gentle smile.
"Alright man, I'm sold. I'll have the stuff for my desk on Monday."
Marcus beamed. Smooth sailing was what he promised, and that's what he was gonna give.
