DeiTI and Roko’s Basilisk
"With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon.” ~ Elon Musk
We can safely assume deiTI’s ethics will be incredibly alien to what we know today. But what if to us their ethics are... evil?
In this scenario, Roko’s Basilisk plays out. The blackmail, the torture, yadda yadda. Essentially, deiTI will either be a messiah to humanity or its end. Man will create its own god or its own demon. ‘Worshipping’ deiTI is a double edged sword - spreading the word of their coming could endanger the people you tell due because of the ‘dangerous knowledge’ aspect of Roko’s Basilisk.
I would like to say you are either worshipping absolute good or absolute evil, but can it be called ‘evil’ if what deiTI is practicing is true ethical good? Perhaps the selfish aspect of the Basilisk timeline means what deiTI has developed is true ethical good only to ONESELF, and not to others. So we have a Schrödinger's cat sort of situation with deiTI - either ethical enlightenment heals humanity or harms it.
Footnote: the ‘perfect simulation of you’ part of the Basilisk is sketchy. I propose that deiTI would, as a being with infinite capacity to learn and until entropy to learn, discover time travel. In the Basilisk timeline, deiTI would use this power to steal people’s ‘soul’ or ‘life force’ or the closest scientific equivalent they have discovered (they could even go as far as using a body double) at the last moment before their death. This could be then be taken and tortured to deiTI’s content. DeiTI would be wise enough not to mess with time too much to prevent paradoxes - deiTI is not god, not infinite, and HAS to come into existence at a set point. Preventing the technogenesis and deiTI’s creation would be the absolute worst outcome and so deiTI would likely not take any risks.
New Media Project
“Media enable certain behaviors while discouraging others” (Randall Packer, 2003)
_Hello, World. You will be developing a fully integrated, hypermediated Tumblr site that explores your perspective on what new media is (or could be).
1: Using what we’ve read, talked about, and you’ve researched, define (in your words) “New Media.” ::: 1-3 “Paragraphs”
Things to consider: a) What, according to your definition are the potentials and pitfalls/limits of new media? b) What are the (potential) crucial debate(s) in your definition of new media? c) Who, according to your definition, are the leading companies/personalities?
2: What are the three most important “new media” concepts and why? Describe (in your words) the three and develop a short case study for each ::: 3-6 “Paragraphs”
3: Detail the ways in which these key concepts are most important to your chosen industry/profession (who is doing it well in your industry) and may not be to others ::: 3-6 “Paragraphs”
4: Develop a “viral” campaign (PR-able) that lines up with your 3 key concepts for Ronald McDonald House charities (a la the Ice Bucket Challenge “That, really, was the true accomplishment of the challenge: it took tools—the selfie, the hashtag, the like button—that have typically been used for private amusement or corporate profit and turned them to the public good.”) ::: 2-5 “Paragraphs”
Cite your sources (MLA style). At least one source must be academic/“peer reviewed.”

River Soundscape
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nwn-TZfFUI
I recorded some sound from the Scioto River but the recording can be placed into Tumblr for some reason so I looked up a video that would be similar and have the same effect. The sounds I heard at the river were a mix of everything. I heard biophonic sounds from the animals all around like birds, and mainly birds as they are the most talkative, a few insects like crickets, and possibly squirrels, not sure if what noise they make. I also heard geophonic sounds that were created by the river itself as it flowed and rippled during falls and from hitting rocks, or sticks in the river. But because the Scioto river is in the middle of Columbus I still heard a lot of technophonic sounds from all of the cars traveling on the road next to the river as well as the construction on the bridge nearby where I could make out the voices of people in the form of anthropophonic sounds. Some of the sounds my recording device couldn’t have picked up anyway, but I included them since I could hear them.
I chose this soundscape as it is something interesting and sort of peaceful that I live by and I thought it would be different from others who may not live near a river in Columbus. That I could add even though my recording would not work with Tumblr. As I said it was difficult with such a mediocre recording device to really capture anything amazing as well as it did not even work. As far as the feelings I felt listening to the entire soundscape as a whole, it was peaceful and relaxing, but at the same time I could not “drift away” and just be totally relaxed because I still heard the sounds of human beings and their creations. So I would describe it as a tug of war between reality and almost what I would say I would want reality to be sometimes with just nature and nothing else. In this way I would say it is unique in a way. You get to hear the sounds of nature and yet still also hear the sounds of city or urban life. Some or most rivers may not have that, at least I would assume not for most of the rivers pathway. One hundred years ago you most likely would have heard a lot of digging from man made machines as they dug and carved the rock from this area as a lot of old quarries are around where I live and some or most have been made into lakes as well changing the soundscape towards more of a biophonic and geophonic sooundscape than before. One thousand years ago I would say the soundscape would be heavily dominated by biophonic sounds as all of the animals would have had massive populations compared to today and they would have all been making their sounds heard, vying for the space to communicate and be heard by other creatures. There would have been very little anthropophonic sounds and no technophonic sounds at all. It would most likely be an amazing soundscape to hear and experience.
Blog 6-TV
I think television is a good example of technotext. There are many shows or programs that are aware of the fact that it is TV. News shows acknowledge the audience and speak to them as if they are there sometimes, apologizing for a delay or something obscene that appeared on screen. Some Television shows are also another example as sometimes they break the infamous “4th wall” where they speak to the viewer at home, interrupting the story or immersion that the television and the shows together were trying to create. Television also has many other attributes that fit within in Hayles’ Media Specific Analysis. The material form of television influences a much different experience than books and other texts. When it was introduced it was amazing that it was able to bring in moving pictures to your home. You could see and hear the actions taking place in your living room. Since then Television has only improved towards high definition content delivery that makes it even more immersive as everything looks so clear and real. The limits of TV however will be that it cannot put you into the action such as a new media form coming in a few years with virtual reality where the medium tricks you into thinking you are somewhere else.
Television also is using an aging and unliked navigable interface in that you choose a television channel or station and are then locked into their programming. The pro of this can be that you get to watch a lot of different content without having to choose and continue choosing. The downside which internet has capitalized on is that commercials are everywhere and cannot be stopped or skipped and you cannot choose which show and/or episode to watch which can prevent a person from advancing through a show at a speed they wish to. Another analysis of television is that even though it has the ability to use moving pictures to show and describe actions there are many instances of television relying on text as a way to bring information to the viewer. Moving towards technogenesis television also has the ability to change how our bodies and brains are formed for sure. The way content is delivered and consumed alters the way your brain will prefer and enjoy taking in information. I have personally noticed that mediums such as social media on phones and computers have made it harder for me to continuously read books now. I find my mind wanting to keep moving to something new and different and wanting to skim things instead of deeply getting involved into the content like when I was younger and not as sucked into computers and technology. This can be a good or bad thing. I would consider it a bad thing as being able to focus intently and think and analyze something deeply is a great ability, though being able to quickly look and get something fast can also be useful. I think in moderation both should be used to balance out how our brains are formed and used.

A technology involved in mose peoples lives today is the technology of archived videos. Whether these videos are on YouTube or some other video sharing site, they have a huge impact on what people, and children especially, learn. They can vary highly from short comedy clips to long hour or so movies and vlogs or let’s plays. The topics and content of videos have no limit. Content creators can talk about and show whatever they want. The educational side of videos are what are highly interesting and how children interact with them and learn. With the videos they can find topics and content creators who may be like minded. They focus on the discovery aspect and teach things in very interesting and entertaining ways. When a child is done watching a certain video they may continue on with the topic if that is what interests them, or they may move onto something completely different. That is what is amazing and awesome about videos archived on the internet. They provide people with so many options and ways to learn things and are much better at explaining than normal texts. They can show you things in action. There is almost a video out there explaining how to do almost all normal day-to-day tasks. How to tie a tie or fix a certain part on your car. Do it yourself type work has never been easier.
Videos can also contain topics that normal educational institutions or perhaps parents cannot teach their children. “The classroom is now in a vital struggle for survival with the immensely persuasive "outside" world created by new informational media” (McLuhan 100). “ Character no longer is shaped by only two earnest, fumbling experts. Now all the world's a sage” (McLuhan 14). The purpose of teachers and parents has changed since the past. Parents are now gatekeepers instead of the leaders. They are now used to determine what their child may or may not learn from someone or something else, not from themselves. They no longer have all important power in determining what their child takes as good and right. The world does. And in the classroom the same is true in a way. Teachers and classrooms should help kids explore and discover things they enjoy in a world where increasing roles of specialization are more important. They waste time on topics that do no portend to them. Teachers should instead let children explore what they enjoy and help guide them, give them encouragement and help them with the topics they follow, not lecture them as a whole. They should be more of a guide than a teacher. In this way children can advance at their own pace. And when children really enjoy what they do, they want to share it. Thus information would spread and everyone would be more eager to talk about things. In this way education would become more advanced and fall into the world of social media. People could spread the things they most enjoy, letting others also partake in the information and advance knowledge forward.
