I am an English teacher at a university and its affiliated private high school in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China.

Story of my life:

Watch’s a behind the scenes domunetary on film making, animal care, living in Antarctica, doin scientific research etc.

Has a sudden and intense desire to somehow be involved in something like that, and does 2 weeks of obsessive in depth research on how I can do/get involved in whatever thing it may be.

This is followed by a crisis because what do I actually want to do with my life!?? There are too many choices. Is this what I really want to do? Can I even afford to try it to see if it is something I’d want to do?

This confusion is then followed by a loss of interest because the thing I’m interested is expensive, a hard to break into field, hyper specific to the point I can’t ‘just try it’ without commuting fully, or I’ll never have the chance because I wasn’t fully committed to it by the time I was 8.

I then return to floating through the void if not knowing what I want to do but not having the motivation to figure it out.

Watches another interesting documentary.

Process repeats in an endless cycle until I eventually decided to just pick something but this has been happening since Always and there are simply too many things for me to pick just one without always thinking ‘what if’

BIG FREAKING UPDATE IN MY LIFE

Okay y’all I know I’ve been mainly using Twitter, WeChat Moments, and other Chinese social media as my way to keep track with the outside world, but it’s time for my Tumblr fans to find out WHAT’S UP WITH ABDULLAH!!!

So I have been accepted, officially, as a English adjunct instructor AND research fellow at Northwest University of China ( 西北大学, Xibei Daxue)

Now if you motherslices don’t know what NWU (Xibei) is, it’s considered part of the Project 211 ( 211工程 ) network of elite Chinese universities. NWU is partnered with Syracuse University, Baylor University, Southern Utah University, University of Bristol, and Osaka University. (For my ATLiens following my blog, this is like me being promoted from Georgia Gwinnett College to Emory University).

Not only will I be TEFLing to undergrads, but I’ll have the ability to travel around Shaanxi Province for special research trips, write, and get published in both Chinese and English-language academic journals. Oh yeah, and I’m getting a pay raise and they’re moving me to an apartment in a nice part of downtown.

Good thing is, the university’s historical archives are completely declassified and open to all faculty, so I can take a look at the documents related to the Red Guard groups at NWU (mainly the NWU Red Guards Revolutionary Rebel Headquarters General Command and the NWU Proletarian Cultural Revolution Committee). Dang y’all. To quote RMR: “This much I know It’s true I came up And so can you And fuck the boys in blue.”
