Charming wasn’t a bad place, but there were bad people and they weren’t always who you would expect.
“Hey baby,” Gemma was sitting in her office looking over some files. “You alright?”
“Just a shit day, ready to get some work done and go to bed.”
Your parents had kicked you out at 16 and you had found one of the only places hiring, Teller-Morrow. Gemma was the only one who worked in the office so it was nice to finally get some help, and since you were living there for free helping her was the least you could do.
“Everything’s buttoned up here, why don’t you go see if some of the guys need some help? Let ‘em know I’ll have dinner ready by 6.” You nodded. This was a typical night at the clubhouse, over the past 2 years you would come there after school and help out before either crashing in one of the apartments or going home with Gemma depending on how busy things were.
The lot was bustling as a few cars were being worked on between some of the motorcycles. “Heyo there darlin!” Chibs called patting the bench seat next to him. “You look upset, what’s the matter?”
You had been with the club for 2 years, helping them and hanging out with them, but you never once brought your shit in for them to deal with. “Nothing, I’m fine. Gemma says dinner’s at 6 and told me to help where I can.”
Tig wasted no time ordering you around but you knew it was all in love, he understood you want to earn and not take so if there was something to do he was going to make you do it. You spent the next few hours learning the different parts of his bike and which tools were used for what. “Dinner!”
You started to put away the tools and greasy rags but Chibs grabbed your elbow gently. “There’ll be time enough for that later, let’s get you fed.” Everyone crowded in the clubhouse filling their plates with the spaghetti and garlic bread the girls had made. “You never told me what’s wrong.”
Chibs had plopped down across from you holding your gaze expectantly. “Nothing’s wrong.” But he wasn’t believing you. “It’s high school bullshit, you’re not interested in that at all.”
“Maybe not, but I care about you and if it feels better to let it out then let it out.”
Shaking your head you just pushed around the noodles. “It’s stupid, I shouldn’t even let it bother me.” Chibs made a face that told you he couldn’t help you if you didn’t talk. “My parents kicked me out, I’ve been living with the MC...it’s a pretty easy target.”
“You’re saying they’re picking on you?” His voice got dark, protective. “What’re they saying?”
“That no one wants me. That I have to earn my keep with bikers because even my own parents didn’t want me, and they’re not wrong but-”
“Hey baby, you’re coming home with us tonight got it?” Gemma had come behind you wrapping an arm around your shoulder in a quick hug. She had heard everything you said to Chibs and she was going to make it right. “Jax, come here.”
The next morning your alarm went off and you got ready for school, it had been an easy night of dishes and being sent to do homework, but for some reason you still couldn’t feel like you were waking up. A shower helped and you spend the extra time you had curling your hair just like Gemma had taught you before picking out clothes.
Opening your bedroom door though, you were surprised to find Jax standing on the other side fist raised and ready to knock. “We’re gonna be late.”
“What do you mean we?”
Jax was only a year older than you, 19 and already a patched member of the club. “I need to run out that way anyway, figured I’d give you a ride to school.”
“Wanna show off to all the pretty little legals?”
His lopsided smile melted your heart a little bit. “Something like that. Get your jacket.”
For your birthday the club had chipped in and bought you a leather jacket you’d had your eye on, it was exactly what you wanted and needed for riding with any of them.
Flipping your hair into the helmet you let Jax step on and start the engine before slipping in behind him. You had rode with Jax so many times that it was easy for you to be comfortable. The rumble of the engine, the way he sped along long stretches of road because he knew you loved it, even the way he tapped your hand to check if you were alright. Everything about Jax was caring.
Pulling into the parking lot at school you suddenly felt a knot in your stomach. The noise was getting a lot of attention and you were starting to worry that this was only going to make things worse. Jax turned the engine off and flipped the kickstand out so you could get off safely, his buzz cut had started growing out so the wind hadn’t gotten to it. “Enjoy yourself?”
“More than you know.” Taking the helmet off you shook out your hair and felt the curls bounce along your shoulder blade. “You gonna pick me up too?”
“Well it was gonna be a surprise.” You laughed thanking Jax for bringing you before starting off towards the door. “Y/N, wait up!”
He took a few steps towards you, that lopsided smile on his face again. “What?”
His fingers were calloused against your cheek, a stark comparison to how soft his lips were. The kiss only lasted for a moment before Jax pulled away and gave you a soft peck. “Had to give ‘em something to talk about. I’ll see you later.”
You watched as Jax rode off smiling back at you before turning the corner, he had everyone’s attention.
For the rest of the day you heard people talking, but not in the way you would expect. No one mentioned the fact that you had no family or that you lived with bikers, but they did talk about how intimidating Jax looked with his tattoos and kutte. No one bothered you all day and the power you now held was exhilarating.
When the bell rang you took your time gathering your things and pulling your leather jacket back on but when you got outside you knew exactly where Jax was.
A group had surrounded him trying to ask questions about the bike and the MC, he was leaning against the seat with his ankles crossed. “Can you all just cool it? I’m here to pick up my girl.” Once they realized you were there everyone parted. The guys looked at you in awe while the girls just looked jealous. “There she is, ready to go babe?”
He held out a helmet using it to pull you in for a kiss before starting the bike. As you left the parking lot you knew everyone was still watching, but all that mattered was Jax tapping your hand and breathing a sigh of relief when you hugged him tighter.
