a/n: excuse possible continuity errors i have not seen these movies in a while but i miss them dearly—supposed to take place pre-raiders (and probably pre-temple too)
"You said this was a legal excavation," you turned your head slowly towards Professor Jones, who mirrored you with his arms raised above his head, "so why does it feel like maybe it wasn't legal?" There were half a dozen enemy soldiers with guns trained on the two of you and a well-dressed man in a white suit emerging between them.
"Just a misunderstanding, Professor L/N. I can get it cleared up." He gave you a grin that did not ease your worries in the slightest—matter of fact, it might have made you more nervous. "Hey, Belloq...didn't realize you were visiting these parts. Why don't we get rid of the guns and have a nice conversation, archaeologist to archaeologist. Yeah?" Indy's surrender turned to a shrug and in the blink of an eye, you'd been tackled behind an armored truck by your colleague and watched him desperately reach inside a window, feel around, and pull out a hand grenade all while you heard heavy gunfire on the other side of this barricade.
"Are you crazy?!" Your eyes widened and you tried to sit up just before he pulled the pin and threw it over the truck. The gunfire suddenly halted, there was shouting in French, then Indy braced himself by covering his ears—you did the same—and BOOM! Once the dust settled, you looked over the hood of the truck and found no more soldiers attempting to kill you. "I am here as an art history specialist, Jones. Now, who was just pointing a gun at me?"
"Well, I don't know all their names, but they were not friends." Indy explained as he dusted himself off and tried to exit the dig site as fast as he could. "We should probably get going before they come back, though. They can be unpleasant." You trudged along behind him, squinting as the sun shined in your eyes as you headed away from the scene, full of more questions.
"Who was the guy in the suit?! 'Belloq?' He was going to kill us! This didn't happen on the last dig, Indy." You ranted as he hiked forward, dripping in sweat and shaking his head. "Henry Jones, come back here!" You shouted and he spun around to look you in the eye.
"He's a shyster, that's what he is. Just a good-for-nothing crook that tries to steal my work. I had no idea he'd been following us, but I took care of it, so let's get back to camp before the guy decides to come back for revenge, 'kay?" Indy explained in one breath and dragged you along back to safety. You wondered how many instances before this that your fellow professor found himself in a predicament similar to this, but he was right—you two needed to get as far as possible from the group that had nearly cut your trip short. "You're not having second guesses, are you?" He turned back with a more chipper attitude and you chuckled through the nerves.
