hi!! how would you suggest setting boundaries? i feel like i don't really know how to hold on to them and end up getting hurt :(
This is going to be a long answer.
What about boundaries makes you uncomfortable or unable to hold on to them?
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the actual issue is not the boundaries; you know what your boundaries are, but the idea of handing out consequences for overstepping them trips you up. You want people to like you, love you, so reprimanding them when they encroach on your boundaries is difficult. You worry they won’t feel the same way anymore, or even worse, you’ll hurt them in response to them hurting you.
You are the most important thing in your life. Your physical, mental, and emotional space should be protected first and be at the heart of everything you do. If you consistently put yourself to the side, you run the risk of no longer valuing yourself for being you, but for what you do for others, and how you make others feel.
Get comfortable with being the most important person in your life. Once you’ve done that, you’ll find it becomes easier to say “no”. It becomes easier to give consequences for bad behavior, and it becomes easier to value those who respect you and treat you right in return. It becomes easier to protect yourself and trust in your decisions.
I’m not saying it’s easy. It’s been a process I’ve been developing for years and years. It takes time to perfect. But finding your voice and making it loud and clear will benefit you in all areas of your life.
