Hi! Can I ask what are your top 12 favorite BL media ever (can be manga, manhwa, manhua, danmei, etc)? Why do you love them all? Thanks if you want to answer!

Of course! Thanks for asking. These are in no particular order but I’ve gone for 3 manga/manhwa/danmei/anime.

Manga

1 - Saezuru

I actually think this was the second bl manga I ever read and omg I love it so much. You’ll probably see a theme that I’m attracted to darker/grittier subject matter. I feel like the smut is earned in this one and as someone who likes the smut to be a payoff. It’s good times.

2 - Kobi no Kyojin/Bi no Isu

Honestly, Nirasawa is unhinged and I love that for him. I had a massive thing for yakuza settings when I first got into bl and this one has always stood out in my memory. Probably because of Ike Reibun’s art style.

3 - Ten Count

It’s a little bit toxic and it’s a little bit sad. One of the few bl manga I have re-read. It’s probably not aged well but I did follow it for a chunk of time as it was publishing.

Manhwa

4 - Dark Heaven

Baby’s first manhwa was about a drug addled rockstar and his interracial relationship with his guitarist who was attacked in a hate crime and then tried to play it safe. Fairly certain there’s religious zealots in this one too!

I adored this manhwa when it was coming out and people definitely slept on it. Also it has a verse couple which I know is a thing people ask for.

5 - Steel Under Silk

Kwon Hee-ryang did nothing wrong in his whole life ever! It’s a toxic power play and I will eat that shit up every time! Sparked my Joseon era obsession which is absolutely never going away.

6 - The Ghost’s Nocturne

The art is stunning! It’s the first uncensored manhwa I ever read. It’s sad, it’s magical, it’s vibes! I’m ridiculously excited for the next season.

Danmei

7 - The Husky and his White Cat Shizun

Love of my danmei life 💗 Meatbun can do no wrong with this one - Mo Ran/Taxian-jun is one of my all time favourite characters. Chu Wanning is me! It’s both toxic and hilarious. The fluffy eras are fun but when it gets unhinged is when Meatbun truly shines imo.

8 - Case File Compendium

Meatbun turned the unhinged antics up to 1000 here and I eat it up every single volume. It’s sort of giving modern au 2ha except with slightly enhanced characters. He Yu is a theatre kid and Xie Qingcheng is so repressed. Watching these two pretend to be straight is peak comedy. But it also gets super sad because of course it does. Meatbun is a fellow angst whore.

9 - Sa Ye

This was literally such a surprise to me but it’s the best slice of life I think I’ve ever read. It’s so melancholic and watching everyone’s relationships develop is just the best. Jiang Cheng is top tier danmei sad boy.

Anime/Donghua

10 - Banana Fish

I’m cheating because this is technically a shojo but if you don’t think Ash and Eiji are in love you’re watching it wrong. Also bl anime in general is pretty mid so…

Fun fact - I was so obsessed with this anime when I was watching it the first time, I watched a whole episode drunk as a skunk in Japanese. Iconic.

11 - Ai No Kusabi

I hate sci-fi but I LOVE Ai no Kusabi. I’ve watched it so many times and I’m still really sad we didn’t get the 12 episodes from the 2012 remake. It’s just vibes. The smut scenes are weirdly drawn but I don’t even care it’s peak nostalgia.

That it inspired Captive Prince just makes the whole thing even better.

12 - MDZS (Donghua)

I’m cheating again because like I said I’ve seen a lot of bl anime but it’s never that good. However I was OBSESSED with mdzs when I watched it. The OP was banger, the voice acting was banger and the grafting that was going on to get things around censorship was on point.

Tgcf may have been the donghua that got me into reading danmei, but I definitely think mdzs is the superior donghua.
