Over the years, Hannukah has evolves in America from a relatively minor Jewish observance to a big holiday celebration. It was seen as an opportunity to engage Jewish children in the religion, as well as a chance for early Jewish immigrants to openly celebrate their religion -- something that wasn't always possible in their own countries. This photo shows a menorah lighting at Grand Army Plaza in 1977. They were protesting workplace safety issues, low wages, sexual harassment, and other concerns. What followed was the “Uprising of 20,000,” one of the country’s biggest labor uprisings to day.
