I had the pleasure of presenting a Lightning Talk at the recent Wales Public Health Conference 2018 presented by Public Health Wales on Tenovus Cancer Care’s ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer Care service.⠀ -⠀ The service started in March earlier this year and we’ve and we’ve already seen over 60 people attend at least one session and 16 people complete all four ACTs to a course.⠀ -⠀ My favourite finding: attendance at a ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer course increases overall satisfaction of life by three point scores out 10.⠀ -⠀ I am thrilled by this and can’t wait to bring this to more people affected by cancer into 2019.⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ #wphc18 #publichealthwales #conference #tenovuscancercare #tenovus #cancer #act #acceptance #commitment #therapy #mindfulnes #presenting #silentdisco #graphs #cancer #care #psychoeducation #satisfaction #presenter #research https://www.instagram.com/p/BqfK4fDlC1T/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12d4ihb3t53jr

On Saturday evening I had the pleasure of hosting an event for @tenovuscancer . - This event was special to me as it was arranged by the Staff Friends of Tenovus Cancer Group; the wonderful group of people below and something I’m a member of. We scrub up quite well don’t we?! - We welcomed over 100 people to the Hilton Hotel Cardiff for our Diamonds are Forever 75th Birthday Celebration Ball to celebrate 75 years of Tenovus Cancer Care. - I got to host my first ever black tie event to add to my Singathon duties and I loved it. I got to share the stage with one of my superstar volunteers, Wayne, who gave our guests insight as to how one of our services, ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer has impacted his life. - It was a really special event and we’ve raised a staggering amount of money to help us help more people affected by cancer. Not bad for a few members of staff who want to carry on helping others! - Thank you everyone who came and partied long into the night courtesy of St. Louis Express! They were awesome and the atmosphere was great! Dream • Wake up • Go do • Deciding what you want to do in life can be hard • The most sure I’ve been on a ‘major’ life decision was to study law. I decided it. I did it • I had an idea - I would work for a large law firm and be in the commercial world • It didn’t work out like that • I deferred my place on the then LPC course in London and returned to home. I still wanted to practice law so I volunteered at my local Citizens Advice while working the breakfast shift in a local hotel • I was advising people. I was being developed and it led me to a job there • It turns out I was quite good at it • But it wasn’t where I wanted to be, or an area of law I wanted to practice • My coworker found me another job in Cardiff in a ‘real’ firm. I wasn’t even looking. It just kind of happened • I saw two Training Contract intakes while I was there to become a solicitor. I still haven’t done my LPC. I was already realising that training to be a solicitor was too narrow for me, and almost, a bit hollow • My career has been about providing high quality, thorough, free independent advice • Maybe it’s caused me to undervalue myself • Why would anyone want to pay? And why should they pay me for a service they can get for free elsewhere? • I became a bit disenfranchised with law. And the firm was going to close. What was I going to do now? • I was lost in a new city • I joined @tenovuscancer five years ago. Still not sure what I want to do. But it gave me scope to try so many things, while working in a field I know well. • I’ve joined choirs. I’ve sang in competitions. I’ve played drums in front of a thousand people. I’ve travelled to every county in Wales. I joined an acting workshop. I’ve been in plays. I’ve still helped people. I’ve learnt to video edit. I’ve contributed. I’ve developed. I’ve led.
