We know now where Kishimoto got the idea.
It was explained in The Last's light novel or databook why the Tenseigan reverted to Byakugan when the eyes returned to Hanabi? I thought that since the Tenseigan is a dojutsu equivalent to the Rinnengan, it would never go back to being a Byakugan, just like the Rinnengan never goes back to being a Sharingan.
No I don't think that was explained, but I don't think that we should just assume that the Tenseigan works in the same way that the Rinnegan does, because remember - even though the Rinnegan is on a level higher than the Sharingan, both of them along with the Byakugan are collectively known as "The three Great Doujutsu". So the Rinnegan and Tenseigan being on a similar tier in terms of power and abilities shouldn't really say much regarding their mechanics.

Yeah Hinata should’ve totally awakened her Tenseigan in the Last, kicked Toneri’s ass, saved Nard, and also had a dojutsu that rivaled Sasuke’s🤷♀️🤷♀️
