If you've ran any level of OCR (obstacle course Races) you know there is a divide amongst the loyalist or the "crazies" as we will call them. This divide is simple, you pick and brand and in many cases decide to trash other brands to boost your favorite.
The biggest culprits to this angst is Spartans (Reebok Spartan Race) and Legionnaires (Tough Mudder). For some reason there is a handful of these racers who refuse to even at times acknowledge the other. Maybe it's the extreme racers who prefer the "race" that spartan implements, and until recently didn't feel that Tough Mudder offered a comparable product when it came to competition.
This of course before the implementation of Tougher Mudder, Toughest Mudder and Worlds Toughest Mudder which offers the challenge along with HUGE payouts for podium finishes. Let's ignore the Elites for a bit however and focus on the open wave "racer".
The weekend warrior who signs up as a challenge, a motivatior or simply for the bling, (most races offer a medal for finishing their races). These folks all share common ground, they want to be fit. This means off the couch and doing something that pushes their limits even if it means 8+ hours of hell. Why is there a divide here? Is it because the person who got their friend to sign up are Mudder Loyal, or they were convinced to STFU (Spartan the F*** Up).
It makes little to no sense to many, aren't we all there for a common reason? To better ourselves in some way? In 2016 I completed 11 races between Spartan Race and the now folded BattleFrog Series. I never completed a Tough Mudder as it didn't seem to have the appeal and being electrocuted honesty didn't seem fun.
Finally, on June 11, in Sacramento I ran the Tougher Mudder with a team of season Spartans. We wanted to stand out as, "Bad ass Spartans" and proudly wore our Trifecta Gear as if saying we were more endowed than the next. What's funny is it worked!! Volunteers gave us "Crazy Spartans" special safety instructions others weren't given, and people were literally whispering and pointing at us as if he had an extra limb.
However, midway through this event we decided it was time to have fun, time wasn't an factor, evident by the amount of time spent in the "Blockness Monster" (2 rounds of this), and the time we spent helping others on Everest 2.0, the pyramid or anywhere else we could help because that is what a "Mudder" does. This in a way was liberating, there was no social divide in our minds we all wanted to finish the same way as the next person, injury free.
Which got me thinking, why hasn't anyone tried to break down these walls of the OCR community, unite Spartans, Mudders, rugged maniacs and many more to better each other.
We all have a story to tell, weight loss, mental challenges, rehab, just trying something new, why not tell it with others who are inspired the same way, but haven't experienced all that OCR has to offer.
This story of wonder is now a call for action!! Join us on Facebook to bring the OCR community together and stop seeing brands and start seeing goals and admiration!! Join us In our newly created group. "West Coast OCR" and bring this community together. -Greg B. OCR racer
