Phaius callosus in the highland rainforest of North Sumatra.
Liparis liliifolia aka Large Twayblade or Mauve Sleekwort is a native terrestrial orchid coming into full bloom now. This patch (other outside of frame) is growing along my driveway. Several more patches are thriving elsewhere on my property. I always look forward to seeing every orchid that grows here come into bloom. Twayblades like moist woodland soils which we have an abundance of. It only produces two glossy/fleshy basal leaves . . . #liparisliliifolia #liparis #twayblade #mauvesleekwort #orchidsofinstagram #orchids #orchidspecies #orchid #terrestrialorchid #nativeorchids #wildflower #woodland #woodlandplants #woodlandgarden #shadeplants #shadegarden #wncmountains #blueridgemountains #upperhickorynutgorge #southernappalachia #iloveplants #ilovegardening #ilovewhereilive #gertonstrong #gerton #maker #potter #potterslife #inspiration (at Gerton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQgkqgWjfR0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Plant of the Day
Friday 14 February 2020
Flowering in the cool glasshouse of Cambridge Botanic Gardens was Calanthe striata, a spectacular example of the Japanese terrestrial orchids. This reasonably hardy species produces a cluster of large, yellow, fragrant flowers above pleated leaves. This plant thrives in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter and mulched with composted bark over the winter.

I bought this jewel orchid-Anoectochilus burmannicus at an orchid show in the spring. I wouldn't care if it never bloomed as the foliage is gorgeous. Pictures can't do it justice. I was excited to see that the flowers are yellow. . . #terrestrialorchid #orchid #yellowflowers #flowersofinstagram #flowerstalking #orchidsofinstagram #houseplantsrock #urbanjungle #house_plant_community #gardenchat #indoorplant #greenyourfeed #get_planted #plantsmakepeoplehappy #bhghome #betterhomesandgardens #plantaddict #plantnerd #planthoarder #flauntyourleaves #apartmenttherapy #houseplantbookauthor #houseplantexpert #Iwritehouseplantbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B4YmGXLAyY3/?igshid=zwseatqegglf
Front Yard Orchid! In the city of Rochester! I’m in shock! I saw these leaves growing in the spring and I left them to see what happened and now look!?! A gorgeous Orchid! Say what!?! This is feet from the sidewalk and street, you can probably even see my garbage can in the background of some of these pictures. WHAT A BLESSING! I’m so so in love right now I can’t deal! I’m just in awe of the power and resilience of our plant relatives and the whole living world that aren’t humans. We gotta pay attention! Stop and smell the flowers for real! Orchids are so so special in so many ways, I practically know NOTHING. I know that mycorrhizae have special connections with them. I know I love them and they are the largest group of flowering plants around. I’ll add the name to this post once someone shares it with me. I can’t find it right now but I know it’s MAGIC and mercury retrograde and I are having a decent time together, obviously. Please don’t come to my house and pull this plant. Ill cry!! I’ll give you a dang garden tour and you can take pictures and we can drink spring water and smoke a spliff. This orchid volunteered itself alongside a beautiful volunteer Oak tree that I’ve been watching grow for three years. My garden is the POLLINATION STATION of my street and I’m proud to have taken useless grass and bring more biodiversity to this city. We helped nurture this small piece of land to be able to receive its beauty, its bounty and its healing. We nurture land to nurture ourselves, and our relatives we share this planet with. Grateful for the abundance the living world shares selflessly for our collective survival. The birds and the bees need you to grow more gardens. Grow stuff! You can do it! They just wanna grow! #smugtownmushrooms #orchid #newyork #rochester #orchidaceae #terrestrialorchid #botany #plantmedicine #mycology #mycorrhizae #ectomycorrhizae #biomimicry #greatlakesbioregion (at 19th Ward, Rochester) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz0Zqh1AQRe/?igshid=ys1ybqexpl3i

The jewel orchids of Sumatra. Jewel orchids are a collection of terrestrial orchids in the subfamily of Orchiodideae and are known for their attractive foliage, especially the colourful leaf veins.
