OK, first of all, I diagnose @melodyofthevoid and @depressed-zimothy with “Drift Compatible.” (People remember Pacific Rim, right? Fighting kaiju using the power of friendship and compatibility in the form of giant mechs? Now THERE’S a crossover I could get into, actually...)

4. Where do the story ideas come from?

The artsy answer is that I take the elements I enjoyed from the source material (the antagonism between Dib and Zim, the vast potential of the Chaotic Weird IZ universe, themes of “uh-oh: maybe I’m unloved, unwanted, and alone”) and reshape them into a story that’s more satisfying to me as an adult. But the truer, more shameful answer is that I lie awake at night, pinned down by various pets, and think about the exact plot circumstances that would lead to maximum anguish. (And then, of course, what circumstances would lead to healing, plot advancement, and character growth after that!)

20. What story that you have written makes you happiest to re-read?

Perhaps oddly, the story that I sometimes reread just for myself is my short fic for the game Wandersong: “Together.” It’s the first piece of fiction I shared after my life kinda blew up a year ago (to the day! Hence my pitiful pleas for attention...). I really love that game, and writing a soft, optimistic little hurt/comfort piece for it reinvigorated me and got me back into writing fiction.

In my “real life,” I write a lot of essays and articles about mental health and positivity, which has been hard to do post Incident. My goal is to spread as much sunshine as I can, even as the world feels darker and darker. I reread that story to remind myself that my mission isn’t pointless or doomed, and that I’m not alone. That it’s OK to be crushed by the weight of it all sometimes. I have people to pick me back up so I can go on singing another day.
