Calling all artists of WH on Tumblr, how the fuck do you start drawing? I need the most diabolical tips and tricks I don't mean "just pick up a pencil" I need the most blood curling advice you can give on drawing armor, astartes with and without armor, ocs, poses.

I desperately want to draw my oc so every advice is very welcome (btw I am a traditional """"""artist""""" I prefer pencil and paper over drawing programs)

Astartes IS the armour.

Astartes armour visually will not match to the proportions of a body, so body references become less useful the bigger the armour becomes. There are cases if you draw the armour according to proportions they may look a bit wonky and skinny in some places than be a big chunky boi

It’s easier to think of the armour as physically part of the Astartes’ anatomy than a shell they’re wearing. Those big shoulders pads are real shoulders now, use them to emote

This is the only way I made peace with Perturabo and how his Logos make his chest look super wide.

Whenever I draw 40k (which is almost regularly now) all I ever think about is the anatomy of their armour

Since you'd like to be asked random shit, I'd like to know if you have any specific methods you use to practice art.

Nothing specific or unique but a few months back I stopped using the airbrush 'cause I was lazy to use it.

Left is when I drew Perturabo in March and had used the airbrush, right is today and there's no airbrush used!

Turns out I was unconsciously using the airbrush to control my rendering. Letting go of the airbrush meant I had to practice controlling colour and value manually, it was both challenging and freeing.
