Introduction to The Terror fandom

This post has got some OFMD fans interested in The Terror - welcome! In case it's useful, here's my quick intro to some of the delights of this fandom.

Comedy: It's remarkable that a canon with so much suffering and death has produced art, memes and discourse that's largely hysterically funny.

Tropes: Somewhere along the way, Hickey has come to be associated with rodents and is often called Ratboy or similar. Crozier on the other hand, and perhaps by extension? is sometimes associated with cats.

Pairings: There are lots of obvious pairings when you watch the programme, and two - John Bridgens/Henry "Harry" Peglar and William Gibson/Cornelius Hickey are canon. Also, of course, every character is eventually paired with every other character in the fanworks. For me, it's all about Jopzier

The videos: This fandom has astoundingly excelllent fanedits. A favourite of mine is Everlasting Love, which manages to portray the programme as a joyful romantic comedy. Search "terror crack" on youtube and you've find a big collection that excavates a huge amount of comedy from less than 8 hours of canon. Many by the genius zehstern eg:

Memes: Similar to the videos, there's lots of fun to be had from Terror memes. Search Cornelius Hickey or Crozier on X and go down the cold boys rabbit hole.

Cold Boys: This is a fan term for The Terror/the characters collectively. It's also the name of the awesome fandom hub - get ready for a huge deep dive at The Cold Boys Fandom Hub

Con: The the online fan con Terror Camp tends to include interviews with the cast as well as high-quality presentations on a wide range of topics around polar exploration and seafaring in general.

The fans: There is a huge amount of talent and intellectual curiosity in the fandom. It's common for fans to have a general interest in polar exploration and wide-ranging tangential history and culture so you'll notice references not just to the Franklin Exhibition, but also Shackleton, Amundsen, Inuit language and various British Naval figures.
