On DUP & British politics.
There have been quite a few posts on the British election and the possible working alliance with DUP and the conservatives.
There have been posts about their policies and about the failure of the election, but for the most part they’ve been completely ignoring the most volatile country in the UK and the most contentious issue falling out of this election.
I don’t know if I’m the best for this, but I’ll do what I can because it’s important and I haven’t seen much coverage outside of northern Irish and republican circles.
here is fairly good mostly unbiased video on the north and south, for if you don’t know much about Ireland. It’s not perfect but it’ll give you some good background it’s from a year ago though, so pre-brexit where things have started ebbing away from situation improving.
So for the current events.
The good Friday agreement.
One of the clauses of the good Friday agreement is that England remain neutral on the issue of northern Ireland, which as far as I can tell is what people are most concerned about.
Sinn Féin has told Theresa May that it is a breach. Also it should be noted that the DUP were the only major party to oppose the good Friday agreement, which has been one of the most instrumental deals in ending large scale violence in northern Ireland. Just keep that in mind.
So by having the democratic UNIONIST party form government with english Tory MPs England is choosing the unionist side.
This has huge potential of reigniting the already existing tensions. the DUP was formed out of the Ulster Resistance, which was a paramilitary organization fighting in the troubles.
(also please note the massive hypocrisy of Theresa May working with the DUP after calling Jeremy Corbin a terrorist sympathizer for talking to Sinn Féin)
There are horrible things in the DUP platform but I want to be really clear that this isn’t just about abortion and gay marriage, this is about a war. This is about reigniting a conflict that need not be reignited. this is about the stability of the entire British isles, because it wasn’t contained during the troubles and it won’t be contained if it comes back.
TL;DR DUP was formed out of a paramilitary organization and it’s potential alliance with the tories has potential to reignite tensions and cause violence and should not be ignored.
@autismserenity you’re the one who has most recently posted something about the British situation so I’d like to tag you and also cause you have a lot of followers and I want people to pay attention to this.
