Every time I rewatch season 1 Rikki is constantly mentioning that Emma has a “perfect life” and “perfect family” - honestly I headcanon that Rikki was jealous of Emma’s lifestyle. Rikki grew up poor, had to watch her parents argue constantly growing up, and then her mother left the picture. And the thing about her dad forgetting her birthday. Then there’s Emma with together parents who are proud of her, a brother she can be a role model to, and her family’s honest with each other- things Rikki probably never got. On top of that, the Gilbert’s are in a good place financially- Emma’s family never had to struggle just to live. That jealousy probably showed by her “shaming” (for lack of a better word) Emma for it.

rikki's dad in season one: notably absent at important moments when emma and cleo's parents are present, compared by rikki to a harrison bennett-level shitty dad

rikki's dad in season two: a sweet and engaged dad with a little bit of a temper like rikki but is capable of apologising, cares heaps about rikki, her friends, and boyfriend

rikki's dad in season three: absent the entire season, not even mentioned once when rikki's life is lowkey feeling apart, notably doesn't even attend her graduation, confusion abounds

it always annoyed me a little how the h2o writers retconned rikki having a shitty dad in season two. back in season one she tells zane that she has a difficult relationship with her dad and it's strongly implied that they don't get on at all. a major plot point of season one is cleo and emma's families and their concern over their sudden changes in behaviour after transforming. in light of this it seems that rikki's dad isn't around at all and doesn't care for her in the same way

then in season two we meet terry. he's a little feisty for sure, a little rough around the edges like rikki, but you can tell he cares heaps about her and wants what's best for her. he wants to be involved in her life, and makes an effort with her, her friends, and her boyfriend. this is wholly inconsistent with the dad who forgets her birthday every single year from back in season one, the one likened to harrison bennett when it comes to shitty dads

and like. maybe rikki has grown a little and has a different perspective on their relationship, or perhaps the relationship itself has changed. but like... say that? a throwaway line from rikki about how things have gotten better with her dad and that she doesn't want to mess things up would have adequately explained the discrepancy between the terry we learn about in season one, and the terry we meet in season two

#don't even get me started on terry's absence in season three as rikki's whole life is falling apart. steam will actually come out my ears #i liked rikki's perspective on her family in season one. it made me feel seen since emma is so close with her folks and don and cleo are #also pretty tight. but then i enjoyed rikki having an imperfect but ultimately well-intentioned dad in season two because she deserves good #parents. or at least one good parent. just like. be consistent?#i think a lot of kids's shows are allergic to showing quote-unquote bad parents because they don't want to alienate parents who might #watch said show with their kids. suffice to say i don't think emma's parents are very good parents. cleo's definitely aren't. and at least #according to season one rikki's dad's parenting skills leave a lot to be desired. but then that's retconned in season two so #the only person allowed to have an actually crappy parent is zane and even that is inconsistent. i absolutely think bella's parents need to #be jailed and also maybe lewis's parents based on the very little that we do know about them #.txt #h2o just add water #h2o: just add water #h2o #rikki chadwick #terry chadwick #queue

calls his bike 'thelma' and spends over a year trying to fix it without giving up

tells rikki her friends are welcome at her place whenever they like and is actually excited about meeting them, hosts a barbecue and tells them to make themselves at home

after the kerfuffle with zane he takes him at his word and immediately accepts his apology, welcoming him into the chadwick family and asking him how he fixed the bike

ostensibly asked for zane's help with the barbecue too
