See “Harlem Encore” (1999) in a new light! Terry Adkins’ aluminum relief sculptures installed along Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem-125th Street station bridge, were recently re-lit right on time for Black History Month, revealing the artwork through new lighting technology.  The work celebrates Harlem’s past achievements, memorializing the Afro-Atlantic ancestors with images such as sphinxes and streaming suns reflecting triumph over adversity. The figures seen in the midst of skyscrapers celebrate Harlem’s bright future, adding strength, dignity, and timelessness to the surroundings.  At night, blue back lighting accentuates “Harlem Encore's” powerful presence on the street.

For Black History Month, we honor artist Terry Adkins, whose “Harlem Encore” (1999), the aluminum relief sculptures installed along the Metro-North Harlem-125th Street station bridge, celebrates Harlem's past achievements and bright future. Images such as sphinxes and streaming suns, add strength, dignity, and timelessness to the daily commute. Though Adkins passed away in February 2014, three decades of Adkins’ work can be seen in his current solo exhibition, “Terry Adkins: The Smooth, The Cut, and The Assembled” at Levy Gorvy Gallery through February 17, 2018.

So enjoyed viewing the works of #terryadkins - amazing artist and late husband of my friend @merelewilliams - @levygorvy gallery. Particularly fond of this piece inspired by #Texas blues great Blind Lemon Jefferson, who frequently played in the Deep Ellum area of my hometown #dallas.
