Maybe this is a coincidence, or maybe scams are getting more sophisticated.

I received this text today:

I don't know anyone named Peter in real life. But I do frequently type the name "Peter" on my phone. You all know why.

I double checked that this is probably a scam, then blocked the number. But this raises questions about online privacy.

But seriously, if you do get a message like this, try not to panic. They're relying on you panicking enough to not double-check if it's a real fine and just sending them bank details. A good general rule of thumb is don't hand you your bank details to anyone you don't know for certain you initiated contact with. If you're not certain, go through your recent activity, check the company contacting you and try putting the number into Google, there's a few good phone number data bases that can give you an indication of if it's trust worthy

Knew it was probably a scam of some kind, didn't realize it was widespread. Got one of those "unpaid tolls" texts a few weeks ago.

Yes, your iPhone or Android phone is under attack—you must delete.

The latest warnings in recent days come from New York, Florida, California and the FCC, which told drivers “toll operators typically don’t use text messages to collect on overdue accounts, and do not use threatening language to rush customers into action.”

That’s an understatement. If you get an unpaid toll text, you should assume it’s an attack. Every time. If you have concerns you may owe a toll, contact the operator using its usual, publicly available channels. Then do as the FBI says and delete the text.

And you should get used to these attacks. They’re not stopping. The next wave is expected to move from tolls to banking, with texts pretending to be from financial institutions instead of toll operators or delivery services.

Hey so I don’t usually do PSAs or anything but there’s a fairly convincing scam going around that almost got me because it popped up while I am waiting for like three different packages rn.

Idk what they’re trying to get from this scam but I know it is one, and apparently it is fairly convincing! As I said it had crazy good timing for me.

If you receive a text claiming to be from USPS, asking you to click on a link or copy/paste a link, DONT DO IT

It is a phishing scam attempting to get your personal information. USPS doesn’t send links. This type of scammer disguises the text as being from some government agency and requiring your information for something.

Verify the name, USPS customer service doesn’t use hotmail, and is also called USPS customer service.

If you get a text like this, report it as junk. Even if you ARE expecting a package, USPS won’t send you a link.

Report it and move on.

So my phone number apparently used to belong to some old guy named Larry. An older woman once called me looking for him, so I assume he was a real guy. Apparently, Larry got his number on some Republican texting list. A list that they use spoofed or stolen numbers to spam manipulative texts and clickable links to. I’ve tried a spam blocker app, but it doesn’t seem to help. I also block and report each one as spam.

I’d been thinking about screencapping some of these to show the kind of messages the Republicans spam at the elderly, and whoever else they get the phone number of.
