Creationism and Christian fundamentalism feeds into the medical skepticism we are seeing in the U.S. and, once again, the main victims of phenomenon like vaccine hesitancy will be children who are helplessly dependent on their adult caregivers.
Infants are given a vitamin k shot at birth because they cannot synthesize vitamin k or get it from their diets, it is vital in preventing vitamin deficient bleeding which can cause death or permanent brain damage. Administering the injection is a bog standard preventative measure done on newborns immediately after birth, usually automatically. More and more parents are denying it and more and more babies are having totally preventable complications in their first 6 months of life just because the vitamin k shot has a black box warning. Doctors are repeatedly trying to explain to parents that babies need vitamin k and parents just keep asking “Why? Why are babies born needing vitamin k? Humans survived for thousands of years before it was invented. This must be a conspiracy.”
Infants, the human life stage notorious for randomly dying with no easily discernible cause. I don’t say that to be flippant, human babies are so incredibly fragile that before the modern era, about half of them died before adulthood. That is a natural 50/50 of making it. Humans did not evolve to be perfectly designed and efficient, we are just functional enough for some of us to survive to adulthood and reproduce. We don’t have to live like that! Looking at the human body through the lens of infallible intelligent design and allowing that to inform your medical decisions is so fucking dangerous.
If you believe God created us, you must know he created us to be imperfect, he created us to be imperfect so we could have the pleasure of discovery and progress and improvement and repentance and growth and learning, he did not create human infants capable of synthesizing their own vitamin k but he created humans intelligent and driven and loving enough to want to ensure that the majority of children make it to adulthood.
I think part of the problem is that we forgot how often children used to die. For the vast majority of history, 50% of children didn't live past the age of 15.
The "problem" is that in the last hundred years or so our medical advancement has been meteoric. So people (in rich countries) forget, how easy it is for a child to die. We have built incredible scientific infrastructure to make sure that kids don't die of diseases like polio. But over time those advancements fade into the background. They become routine.
We are just far enough removed from diseases like polio, that people don't remember how devastating they were. You're not afraid of your kid dying of polio because you don't know any kids who have died of polio.
This allows charlatans to move in and prey on parents more immediate fears. Like the for-profit medical industry and medicalized bigotry. Anti-vaxxers aren't anti-vaxxers because they hate their kids. They love their kids and assholes looking to turn a quick buck have convinced them that vaccines will hurt the thing they love most in the world.

You can have tomatoes in January if you dried/froze/canned/pickled them in July!
Double also: getting in touch with heirloom varieties and growing traditions again! You can have tomatoes in march that still taste and feel fresh if you seek out the right hanging storage varieties - a guy named Hans Fama has been in the spotlight lately for developing / re-finding some of those breeds, but delicious storage varieties exist for most crops, especially the ones humans have been domesticating and nurturing for millennia... combined with chilling and refrigeration techniques, you get cool facts like that even most "fresh" supermarket apples are over a year old before they get to you!

at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly

I run into people on the internet who seem to assume that everyone secretly wants to live a rural life as a farmer and at a certain point I’m like okay man if you believe that so hard why aren’t you getting a degree in agriculture or something?
Or are you just staring at solar punk and cottage core drawings and yearning after a reality that will never exist
Come on bitch, get into plant biology. Study supply chains. Start shoveling cow poop. Spend all day trying to figure out what’s eating your tomatoes. Make the reality you want for yourself.
Study the science of agriculture. Spray some chemicals. Release the ladybugs. Come on now.
Like seriously there’s organic farming communes out there you could join. One of my cousins lives that life.
I’m serious. Do you actually want that life? Like actually? Picking spinach out in the sun? Living communally? If you actually want that there’s ways for you to do it.
I know I don’t want that because I’ve grown my own food before. But if you want it there’s not much stopping you. You could drop your current life plans and go back to school for agriculture anytime you want.
I think what they want is for their lives and the work they do to have some kind of real meaning and have decided that since their urban life feels hollow and meaningless, the answer must be somewhere rural. I grew up rural, not farming/subsistence rural, more like small town rural and the truth it also feels kind of hollow and meaningless; a significant number of kids from my town leave for city life searching for purpose. Capitalism demands everything be consumed in pursuit of draining capital into the hands of an ever shrinking number of billionaires at the cost of millions of lives. You don't want to be a communal subsistence farmer, you want a community and for life to mean something
