Thank you so much for your comments in your post! #Reposting @sampickard_textiles with @instarepost_app -- Screen printing is a very efficient way of regulating the amount of dye printed onto fabric. Here the heavy weight linen that my fern cushions are printed on, has 6 pulls back and forth with the squeegee for the fern green, but only 4 pulls for the finer outline. Unlike a printmaking squeegee which is square ended, a textile squeegee is rounded to enable more dye to be pushed through the screen and into the fibre. The textile dyes used for these cushions are Procion dyes, valued in the textile industry for their high wash and light fastness on cellulose fibres. Once the linen is printed and dried, it’s steamed to fix the dye and then washed. The dyes and craft skills I use for printing all my textiles, ensure that my products are robust, have the soft handle of the linen, are fit for purpose & will last for many years. . . #textiledyes #madetolast #slowmovement #hamdprintedtextiles #thecraftofprintedtextiles #ferns #ferncushion #craftswoman #cushion #pillow #holeandcorner #makersmovement #textilecraft #camberwellschoolofartandcrafts #devonguildofcraftsmen https://www.instagram.com/p/BphiuV-hwAA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nparaunw7u6v
Dyeing with avocado skins 🥑
Recipe:
4 whole avocado skins
1 liter water
Clean the skins from all the avocado leftovers.
Put them in a pot and top up with water so the skins are completely covered.
Heat up until it starts to simmer, not boiling- Leave for around 1h then take pot of the stove.
Wet your fabrics and wring out before putting them in the dye.
Leave in for as long as you want, the longer you wait the darker and stronger the color will be. The above swatches was left for 1 hour and 8 hours.
Take the fabric out of the dye, wash thoroughly and let it dry
We are very happy with the ens result and this dye is definitely something we will use in our collection! It was very interesting to see the vast difference in tones from the swatches dyed for 1h and the ones dyed over night. Fabrics used, left to right: Milk twill, Cotton poplin, Cotton twill, Cotton poplin, Cotton twill, Woven polyester and silk.
