Hey! I'm like 1/3 through the first book and i really like everything except the Matthias dude and his whole culture centered around witch hunting. Does that part get any better because it's starting to really annoy me. Currently at the flashback where Nina remembers how she got captured and I reaaaaally don't like this. Is this dealt with well? Sorry if this is out of the blue. If I really get into this series, I'll definitely follow you since I like what I see 💕
First off, I never really liked Matthias much either. His identity as a Druskelle does play a major part in his role and identity, which I found more concerning than interesting too. The way Bardugo handles this is mainly to show off character development and how people can change their toxic mindsets, so it does get handled better as the story goes on and stops being really uncomfortable later on in the book, so they both have a healthier relationship.
It’s just strange at the start since Mathias has large emotions of violence and lust towards Nina, but as the story progresses he begins to re-educate himself and change his enforced mentality of violence towards Grisha so that he can love Nina in a more healthy way.
So definitely hang in there with Matthias’s POV! Because the world and the other crows definitely make the story worth it! Also the component is super sweet, thanks! Hopefully I’ll see you around anon! 💕💕
