I said I shouldn’t, and I meant it - but my self-control is about as liable to crumble as a Cucco is to rain fire upon their enemies. The first image is the GameCube version of Twilight Princess with the game’s vanilla textures, running in Dolphin at 1080p - and the second is that same scene with TPHD’s textures ported over. See the GIF for a clearer comparison.
It seems silly to port higher-res textures into a game that is now over 13 years old (especially when I can just emulate the Wii U version, which is how I was able to access those textures in the first place), but Dolphin (GameCube emulator) has so many features that Cemu (Wii U emulator) currently doesn’t, the most friendly of which being the free-moving camera, which is how I was able to nab these screenshots in the first place. Seeing these images side-by-side really draws attention to how much more crisp the Wii U textures are in comparison; take the veins on Ganondorf’s neck, for instance. You can also see that they tried to make the game a tad more colorful the second time around.
By no means do I intend to port the entirety of TPHD’s textures over to the GC version, as that would be a massive undertaking - but being able to get cleaner screenshots and GIFs of whatever I do accomplish will be a satisfactory reward.
Not really related to my Text-Free TP project, but at some point over the past few weeks while rummaging around in the game’s texture files, I realized that I wasn’t in any way limited to only replacing the game’s UI--and so of course, the first question I asked myself was:
Can I make it brown?
The answer is yes. Yes, I absolutely can.
As of now I’ve only touched up the textures on Link’s Ordonian garb, and I imagine this would need to be done for all of his outfits--though that should hardly be difficult. I don’t know that there are enough people out there who both a) are still playing Twilight Princess in 2019 and b) would use such a thing in the first place to warrant creating a completed pack for general use, but I’ve enough of a vested interest in it that I plan on finishing it regardless.
And heck, this could potentially be done with every other character in the game, too. Emulation is a damn great tool.
I had been meaning to give Ashei the same treatment I gave Link since I realized it was possible, and I finally got around to getting off my lazy bum and doing the dang thing. Compare her vanilla textures (left) to my modded textures (right). Ashei is brown now, guys. Sorry, I don’t make the rules but I DO make the mods.
Right now, I’m looking at Agitha, Renado, Luda, and Telma for future projects (as well as the residents of Ordon and the miscellaneous people that run about Castle Town). I may consider Coro and his siblings if I can do something about Iza’s outfit. At any rate, once I’ve done enough work on people that AREN’T Link, I plan on releasing the mod in one complete and proper texture pack, so look forward to that!
About thirteen years too late, but here’s a comparison of vanilla Telma (left) vs. Telma with a custom shirt texture (right). Nintendo has always had a serious problem with objectifying black and brown women in their games, and though there’s not much I can do to fix the egregious cleavage that’s built in to her model, I figured I could at least try to do this much.
I don’t know that I’m very satisfied with the results, but I think this is probably the most natural it’s going to look.
A experimental texture sketch i did last summer. I only used two ballpoint pens and some white out.
