Just a Flesh Wound // Phoenix and Elena
According to the doctors, Elena should be awake and alert. The woman woke several times in a deluded state only to fall back to sleep quickly. Her body craved the rest needed to heal the loss of blood suffered from the wound to her back. The official records stated that the bullet entered her back, grazing her spleen. The surgeons had patched up her body as best as they could while removing the bullet from her system. The records said that she should make a fast and full recovery. What they failed to mention was that the woman was lucky to be alive. That in all the chaos which ensued, she could have been trampled to death. With the area that she did collapse in, she could have been left to bleed out. That the bullet could have hit a vital organ causing her death. Elena’s records only told the tale of her vital signs. There was no mention of the friends in the hall worrying over what the doctor would tell them. There was nothing written about the friend by her side.
Her chest rose and fell in a constant rhythm with the help of the oxygen tube in her nose. Aside from her mussed hair and pale skin, nothing about Elena’s face showed that she was gravely injured. The damage was hidden beneath a gown and bandages. Tucked safely out of view by a blanket designed to keep her body warm while she faded in and out of consciousness. Her breathing changed patterns slightly, as indicated by one of the many monitors ensuring that the woman was truly healing. Her nose twitched as she slowly opened her eyes.
Elena attempted to sit up, but a pain in her back caused her to hiss, laying right back down. She searched her mind for what could possibly have caused the pain. The last thing the woman remembered was going to the Arts Alive Festival then nothing. Her head was pounding as she reached for the bottle of water she normally kept on her nightstand, but there was nothing there. Looking at the ceiling, she realized why. She wasn’t in her room at Adam’s house. She didn’t fall asleep on Rosie’s sofa either. Elena had no idea where she was. The monitors started to beep quickly sending out the alert that the woman’s heart rate rapidly increased. Panic set in as she looked around trying to find out what happened and where she was.
