A Coffee Cup, Part 2

After Chapter 122 I wrote a post about how the focus on the coffee cup shows how the reunion of Kaneki and Touka represents the success of their relationship in :re where the parallel relationship of Eto and Yoshimura failed in the first series.

Seeing it here again marks its final and complete success. Kaneki and Touka are married with a child, surrounded by loved ones in utter domestic bliss.

But the symbolism doesn’t stop there. The coffee bookends the series as that is how it began.

Coffee means Anteiku, and Anteiku represented the possibility of co-existence between humans and ghouls. Coffee was the only thing that ghouls could consume without harming humans, representing the peaceful path. And it was a coffee shop that rescued Kaneki when he was lost, terrified, and being consumed by his worse half, all those chapters ago when he was turned into a half-ghoul.

Coffee represents home and harmony in an utterly brutal world. And in the end, it’s coffee than won out over it. Our heroes are now dealing with pockets of danger in a kinder world, when once they searched so desperately for pockets of peace in a cruel one.
