New book arrived today! #th350
Final teardown. Inspection.
I think I got quite a bit done today on the transmission. Way too much solvent vapors for one day. With each step, more and more damage is revealed. Several steels had some heat discoloration so I decided to replace all the frictions. The sun-gear shell definitely has some play around the gear - found one of eBay. I opted for that route rather than tear down the other TH350.
The bearings are definitely a stress point for me. I'm missing the proper tool to chisel out the existing bearing and the kit I rented from Autozone doesn't have all the right sizes. I ordered the critical case bearing tool. The tricky ones will have to say in place.
Should have everything I need to start reassembly this week.
Direct-clutch drum. Had a hard time trying to figure out which way the seals went from looking at the book. In the end, common sense prevailed. Well, that's if it doesn't blow up.
Pump disassembly. Only broke two seal rings in the process.
Valve body disassembly. The instructions were pretty straight forward, but I didn't really get it unit the first valve came out. Bought the bare-bones ATP shift kit. Mainly wanted to replace the plate which was warped, gaskets and a few springs for timing.
The People of Craig's List
Of course as soon as I tear into the transmission, I come across a Craig's List post from someone selling a TH350, < 10,000 miles, good condition, $140. Couldn't pass it up. Just parts alone would cost way more than that and it's not terrible to have a spare lying around.
Turned out to be a slightly different setup (long shaft, NP208 adapter) but the guy took good care of it. His Dad's truck got totalled by a drunk driver. He just wanted a good home for the left over parts. I took it off his hands, no questions asked.
The guy was super cool. He had some gems sitting in the yard - Nova, 72 Chevelle, go-cart, etc. The real projects were in the garage. Turns out he builds custom tailgating wagons. These are not your everyday Red Flyers. These are crafted, full suspension, electric powere (18mph), refrigerated-kegerator, LED lighting, stereo... The "Barrel" modle was cool, but his work-in-progress was amazing - a exact replica of a Humvee sculpted from fiberglass, except that there's a keg where passengers would sit. He was building it for some military friends. He's truly an artist.
