15. Bhaal handcrafted Durge. Do they enjoy and worship their appearance, or did they have a rebellious phase, trying their best to change their Lord Father's grand design?

esper's actual terror of seeing their own face and meeting their own gaze in the mirror didn't really set in until after they were tadpoled, but they've never been able to stomach their own appearance. to them it feels like looking directly at the sun, if the sun gave you burning rage and hatred instead of retinal damage -- since they can't really turn off their passive psychic bard magic scan, they can't focus on themself without getting blasted with bhaal's divine presence in their body.

moreover, they grew up half-drow in the underdark. even though they're not a 'real' half-drow as such, esper still grew up with a looootttt of baggage pertaining to the hatred and disdain they received for just their appearance. since they're paler than the average drow, a lot more human-looking, on the tall side (for a drow), etc., not even touching on the fact that the matron of house auvy'rae raised them as a girl instead of as a boy for political convenience When Esper Is Neither, they have a bit of classic body dysmorphia that did not go away when they started living among humans. didn't help that the humans were Also racist.

esper has lots of problems with self-grooming for reasons that have always been unclear to them -- it's partially because they can't stand to look at themself, but it's compounded by the fact that they don't think it's worth cleaning up much if they're just going to get all bloody again. they used to have really long hair as a child, but they had someone else to take care of it for them, and after they left the underdark it quickly got matted and needed to be cut off.

the one thing they've never been particularly self-conscious about is their scars. the oldest of them (the burn) they got from surviving the first of their toddlerhood assassination attempts. esper went back and forth on thinking of it as a mark of survivorship, and then eventually, when they joined the temple of bhaal, a mark of utmost divine favour and their mission. but they've accumulated a lot of scars over the years. since bhaal won't let them die, they spend most of their time magically disguised, and they don't own their own body anyway, esper got to a point where they just stopped caring how they look at all. they ultimately viewed their body as just this kind of shitty little vessel of pain that didn't matter as long as it could effectively serve bhaal. just like a 200$ beater car that's held together with duct tape and a dream. the check engine light has been going off for years but it still takes gas and drives to your job so it's fine. everything is fine
