janiil......janiil my beloved.........they are so evil and bittersweet and compelling........
i know right... i was making my header today (inspired by THIS edit and i think about it EVERY DAY not even kidding) (i want to make a proper janiil web weaving or smh #soon too) and they're so interesting to me. like, their play styles have some sort of similarity, my bambi-legged, long-ass legs faves... but their narratives are so different and yet they intertwine so much.
daniil is stuck in the middle of a generation that is after the big three, which is already insane: three people accumulating 66 slams between them, and before the whole sincaraz narrative. meanwhile he's the only from the lost-gen who got sooo close to actually making it past one gs. i mean... he did something thiem nor raonic nor zv*r*v (so far... ) could which is make it to no. 1, and he won a gs against one of those people whose shadow kind of eclipses everything that comes after them (another dynamic i find reeeally interesting is daniil/nole...) and not only that but also on ao which is nole's most won slam... but he also has so, so soooo sooo many missed opportunities.
the fact that he used to be 6-0 against jannik, from their first meeting at a 250 in 2020 (where i think daniil made qfs?) to a slam final four years later that jannik wins... i don't know, that gets me.... and i find it so good narratively that of course daniil is the one from that generation who made the most slam finals, but he only won one. which means he got there, over and over again, and then lost them. and obviously it must be incredible just to get there, but falling from that height over and over... i don't know how he does it on a psychological level...
something about losing all his finals until 2024 to the big three and then the last one to jannik (WATCH THIS EDIT.... i think about it every day...), the kid he used to have such a good h2h against??? oh god... the themes !!
but BUT we can't forget MY favourite recent moment, which i wanted to include in my header and was actually my original inspiration because they looked really nice and because it was such an amazing final: indian wells this year. beating carlos and then fighting like that in the final... daniil moves me so much. he's a sisyphean character to me. you think he can't get any lower and then he does, and then when you stop believing in him because you think "oh, he's just going to hurt me again," THEN he does something amazing and you start believing all over again. and eventually he loses, but that high when he's good is just so good.
i'm genuinely moved by him. also something about having such a terrible 2025 and then finally winning a title at the very end of it⦠and then starting 2026 with another one. i don't know, i'm very romantic about him... he simply does not know how to stop trying!!!!! there is something so deeply compelling to me about a player who keeps coming back not because the narrative ~ says he should, but almost in spite of it... swimming against the tide...
anyways sorry i'm missing daniil a lot so i ended up talking about him, but yeah... i feel like jannik is my beautiful horse who likes apples and will probably win a lot of matches even if he occasionally loses the ones you least expect him to, while daniil is also a beautiful horse (someone said recently what type of horse he was i really liked that post but idk where it is... ) that you keep betting on even though you know he might lose, like the mitski song, but there's always a what if, because he is basically an unstoppable force of will crashing against the immovable object that is the cyclical narrative of the universe (and also himself !!!!!!!!!).
oh wait and also... i think daniil is constantly fighting himself: his impulses, his emotions, his own brain. everything is external with him. you can watch him argue with himself in real time and you think he's crazy and he is! meanwhile jannik is fighting something completely different, i feel like he's fighting the narrative of who people think he is. i don't buy the "he's a robot" thing at all, because he's actually emotional, but unlike daniil he keeps almost all of it inside. people want him to be inevitable, a machine, the already established narrative of sincaraz, and i think sometimes he's fighting against becoming sure of himself, he's always on the verge between believing too much he's gonna win (which is important and what makes him play so fluid sometimes imo) and being afraid of losing and insecure of himself (which also makes him defend so well).
they're almost opposite poles. daniil expresses everything until his emotions become part of the match and jannik hides everything until people assume there's nothing there at all.....
anyways i love them both. jannik is my no. 1, but at the same time, if i ever want him to lose, it's either against one of my countrymen or against daniil, and that is not something i take lightly
