Can’t shake the peculiar feeling that the entire BEAST timeline was Dazai’s way of giving everyone a happy ending. (Or at least, a happier ending.)
I mean, of course, the MAIN GOAL was ‘Oda Does Not Die In This AU’. But once that goal was met, once he was sure that it’d hold, and Oda would live out a happy life, everything else feels like “and here’s a better life for you too”, dropped onto the people he used/twisted to get that far.
Akutagawa didn’t just get ‘a gentler life with the ADA’, he got the wakeup call for how to be a better/happier person.
Atsushi, little neurotic tiger, got taken off the board entirely and given the therapy he so badly needed.
I mean it’s not perfect, but the Book does demand narrative consistency.
Iunno. It just feels like Dazai-as-chessmaster at that point was basically going, “I get my happy ending...so I’ll leave you guys on a better note too.”

Reasons I Don’t Talk to People.
I got a call from an unknown number and before I could say anything the woman said “Hi, I’m calling from [Vet’s office]. Your dog Shadow just got out of surgery.”
I don’t even have a pet, let alone a dog named Shadow, but my automatic canine-loving reaction was to say “Oh, are they okay?” She started explaining that “she did very well” and that’s when I came to my senses and realized that I should have ended this conversation two minutes ago. I sort of panic stuttered and blurted out “glad she’s okay, but you have the wrong number, sorry bye!!” and hung up 🤦🏻♀️
And that is exactly why I prefer texting.
(But I’m glad it went well, Shadow. I hope you feel better and get all the belly rubs and treats 🐕♥️)
