The Rose’s Lament
Chapter Four: Drunken Beasts, Stolen Pillows and the Mystery of the Missing Bathrooms
<<< Chapter 3 °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・ Chapter 5 >>>
"Shouldn't Burning Spice and Silent Salt be sent to bed like misbehaving toddlers instead of being allowed to stay up?" Eternal Sugar quipped, now draped in luxurious silk pajamas the color of spun sugar. She flopped unceremoniously onto the mountain of plush cushions that served as their makeshift bed in the Spire's grand living quarters, her cotton candy cloud puffing up beneath her like a temperamental pillow.
Mystic Flour Cookie, already curled up in a nest of velvet throws, nodded in agreement as she absently braided a lock of her hair. "And don't your prized students currently live in the Spire?" she added, raising an elegant eyebrow. "Won't it be... awkward for them to stumble upon five ancient Beasts having a sleepover in your parlor come morning?"
Shadow Milk Cookie chose that moment to float into the room, his navy satin robe billowing around him like liquid midnight. "Engk! Correction," he chirped, popping the 'k' with theatrical precision as he deposited an armful of snacks onto the low table before them. "My darling students reside in the academic wing, in which they are strictly prohibited from entering this sacred domain—my personal quarters." He punctuated this by dramatically draping himself across Mystic Flour's lap, nearly upsetting her tea.
"As for our inebriated companions," he continued, gesturing grandly to where Burning Spice was currently attempting to balance a cracker on Silent Salt's forehead (the latter having graduated from unconscious to semi-conscious in a worrying development), "let's just say I appreciate quality entertainment." He took a deliberate sip of his wine, eyes twinkling with mischief.
Eternal Sugar snorted inelegantly, rolling onto her stomach and pillowing her chin on her cloud. "Sure, until one of them projectile vomits on your precious satin robe," she muttered, tearing open a packet of gummy bears with her teeth. "I'm not helping you exorcise the stains this time."
Shadow Milk gasped, clutching his chest as if wounded. "You monster," he lamented, though the effect was ruined when Burning Spice chose that moment to topple over with a loud snore, taking the entire snack tray with him.
Shadow Milk stared blankly as Burning Spice face-planted directly into their snack spread with a muffled thump, his drunken snores sending a cascade of pretzels and chocolate-dipped strawberries tumbling to the floor. A long, suffering exhale escaped Shadow Milk Cookie as he took another measured sip of his wine.
"Well," he declared, eyeing the now-contaminated treats with disdain, "it appears our culinary delights have met an untimely demise." With a dramatic flick of his wrist, he banished the ruined snacks into the void. "To the games, then!"
Eternal Sugar immediately narrowed her eyes, swirling her drink with a predator's grace. "If you suggest 'Two Truths and a Lie' and then proceed to lie about all three," she purred, "I will skin you alive and turn your hide into a throw pillow."
Shadow Milk's laughter rang through the Spire, bright and unrepentant. "Not tonight, darling! Tonight, we indulge in a classic—a good ol' game of Never Have I Ever!"
Mystic Flour popped another gummy bear into her mouth, her expression serene. "Ah, yes," she mused. "A delightful exercise in revealing one's most embarrassing misadventures across the centuries." She tilted her head. "And what, pray tell, is the prize?"
Shadow Milk shrugged, the motion sending his satin robe slipping dangerously off one shoulder. "Initially, I considered food as adequate compensation," he admitted, "but then I realized—to truly get you exciteeeed, the reward must be... irresistible." He let the silence stretch, savoring their curiosity as he took several more leisurely sips of wine. Then, with a flourish: "...My favor."
Eternal Sugar's eyebrows shot up. "Your favor?"
"Mmmhmm!" Shadow Milk confirmed, slurping the last of his wine with obnoxious gusto before slamming the glass down. "For the next decade!" He flung the back of his hand to his forehead in a theatrical swoon. "I shall be the winner's personal slave—bound to fulfill any request, no matter how absurd!"
Mystic Flour's lips curled into a rare smile. "A tempting offer indeed," she murmured. "You've piqued my interest."
"Oh, I'm going to relish making you regret this," Eternal Sugar cackled, dissolving her cotton candy cloud to sink into a beanbag with vengeful glee.
"I already do," Shadow Milk deadpanned, refilling his glass with a sigh. He twirled the stem between his fingers, the wine catching the light like liquid rubies. "The rules are simple: start with ten fingers raised. Whoever folds all ten first wins." His grin turned wicked. "Prepare for brutal honesty, darlings~"
Just then, Burning Spice lurched upright from his impromptu nap, blinking blearily. "Whu... if... thirty fingers...?" he slurred, staring at his own hands as if they held the secrets of the universe.
Shadow Milk smirked. "Then you're a lost cause."
"You lost your two pairs of arms centuries ago, you idiot," Eternal Sugar reminded him, tossing her empty gummy bag at his head.
Burning Spice raised his remaining arms, paused, then erupted into drunken guffaws. "Ohhh, yeah!"
With a clap of his hands, Shadow Milk raised all ten fingers, his eyes gleaming. "Let the fight for me begin!"
"Ew, phrasing," Eternal Sugar groaned, hurling a pillow at his face.
And so, beneath the Spire's enchanted skylight—with one Beast snoring into the carpet, another swaying dangerously, and the rest armed with centuries of scandalous secrets—the most cutthroat game of Never Have I Ever in history commenced.
The game began with Shadow Milk's opening salvo, his eyes glinting with mischief as he surveyed his fellow Beasts.
"Never have I ever..." he drawled, pausing for dramatic effect before finishing with a smirk, "...floated."
Shadow Milk and Eternal Sugar each lowered a finger, while the others groaned in protest. Shadow Milk shot Eternal Sugar an incredulous look. "You don't float," he deadpanned. "You fly. There's a difference."
Eternal Sugar waved a dismissive hand, her nose scrunched in indignation. "Well, it sounds the same to me!"
Eternal Sugar took her turn with a wicked grin, her voice lilting like a nursery rhyme turned sinister. "Never have I ever..." She paused, savoring the moment. "...fallen in love with a pink cookie who has children and possibly has another lover."
A collective groan rose from the group as Eternal Sugar happily lowered a finger, triumphant.
Shadow Milk arched a brow. "You desperately need a stable relationship."
Eternal Sugar stole a sip from his wineglass, unfazed. "That word isn't in my dictionary."
Mystic Flour's turn was delivered with her usual serene poise. "Never have I ever..." She paused, her lips curling into a faint smile. "...had the word 'Flour' in my name." She lowered a finger without hesitation.
"That's cheating!" Eternal Sugar squawked, outraged.
Mystic Flour merely blinked. "It's strategy."
Burning Spice, roused from his drunken stupor for the fifth time that night, slurred his contribution. "Never... ever..." He squinted at his hands as if they held the answers. "...gave trauma to cookies." He lowered a finger, then blinked hopefully. "Did I win?"
"No." The chorus of replies was immediate, followed by lowering of fingers across the board.
Silent Salt, having been jostled awake by the commotion, simply stared at them before lowering a finger without a word.
Shadow Milk nodded sagely. "We understand."
They did not.
The game devolved into chaos from there. Burning Spice accidentally confessed to burning down Eternal Sugar's paradise centuries ago, resulting in a near-fatal pillow duel that only Shadow Milk and Mystic Flour's intervention prevented from becoming an actual coma. Silent Salt remained a silent observer, contributing nothing but increasingly concerning stares.
Finally, Shadow Milk lowered his last finger with a flourish. "I win.”
Eternal Sugar's finger shot out, accusatory. "WHAT?! That's unfair—how are you supposed to be a slave if you, yourself win?!"
Shadow Milk's smirk could have powered a small city. "That's the point."
Eternal Sugar's grumbling was lost beneath Mystic Flour's amused hum. "Well played," she conceded. "We'll get you next time."
Shadow Milk's laughter rang through the Spire, bright and challenging. "Sure, you will!"
And as the midnight clock chimed, the Beasts—exhausted, slightly traumatized, and thoroughly outmaneuvered—finally succumbed to sleep.
(Though Eternal Sugar did steal Shadow Milk's favorite pillow in retaliation. Some battles were worth fighting.)

Burning Spice Cookie groaned as consciousness dragged him kicking and screaming into the waking world. A headache the size of a freight train slammed into his skull with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, and he hissed through clenched teeth, pressing the heels of his palms against his temples as if he could physically push the pain away.
"Ugh... never drinking again," he muttered to absolutely no one, squinting as his vision adjusted to the dim light filtering through the Spire's arched windows.
Around him, the other Beasts slumbered peacefully—Eternal Sugar Cookie curled atop her cotton candy cloud, its pastel swirls shifting gently with each breath; Mystic Flour Cookie serene on their makeshift bed, their expression unreadable even in sleep. Shadow Milk Cookie's absence was notable, though the crumpled blankets beside Mystic Flour suggested he'd been there at some point.
Burning Spice rolled onto his side—
—and nearly screamed.
Silent Salt Cookie loomed in the shadows, his violet eyes glowing faintly in the darkness, his gaze fixed on Burning Spice with unnerving intensity.
"Can you stop that?" Burning Spice snapped, his voice hoarse.
Silent Salt, predictably, said nothing.
Grumbling, Burning Spice hauled himself upright, swaying dangerously before catching his balance. "Alright," he announced to the room at large, "where's the damn bathroom? I'm gonna piss myself."
He staggered toward the door, only to hear the soft shuffle of fabric behind him. Turning, he found Silent Salt trailing him like a particularly ominous shadow.
“You too, huh?" Burning Spice grunted, scratching his stomach. “We really drank a lot."

What followed was a farcical odyssey through the Spire's labyrinthine halls. They flung open door after door—disturbing sleeping students (who groaned and hurled pillows at them), stumbling into storage closets (where mops toppled onto their heads), and even accidentally demolishing a few fragile magical apparatuses (when Burning Spice slammed a door shut with more force than finesse).
“With a place that houses hundreds of students," Burning Spice growled after the fifth failed attempt, “you'd think there'd be bathrooms every five feet!"
He turned to Silent Salt, who stared back with his usual enigmatic silence. Burning Spice nodded sagely, as if the other Cookie had spoken.
“Yeah, you're right. That jester probably has his own fancy bathroom in his room. Bet he wouldn't mind sharing."

The trek to Shadow Milk's private quarters felt like climbing a mountain. The winding staircase seemed to stretch into infinity, its walls adorned with an unsettling gallery of portraits—centuries' worth of Shadow Milk's many faces staring down at them, each more smug than the last.
“Ugh," Burning Spice muttered, shuddering. “This looks like a scene from Harry Butter or some shit."
As they ascended higher, the portraits gave way to painted constellations that glowed faintly in the dim light, their celestial patterns shifting as if alive. Burning Spice, now wheezing like an overworked steam engine, crouched halfway up, gripping his knees.
“No wonder the motherfucker floats," he wheezed. "Who the hell would willingly walk up these steps every day?!”
With a final, heroic effort, they reached the top. Burning Spice shoved the door open—
—and froze.
“What the—"
"—fuck?" Silent Salt finished, his voice rough from disuse.
Shadow Milk's room was less a living space and more a shrine to a singular, all-consuming fixation. Theories scrawled in frantic handwriting covered every inch of the walls, connected by strings in a web of desperation. Crumpled papers littered the floor like fallen leaves, and towers of books teetered precariously, some high enough to brush the vaulted ceiling.
But it was the pictures that stole their breath.
Dozens—hundreds—of images of her.
Her face smiled down at them from every surface—sketches tucked between pages, paintings leaning against furniture, even faded photographs preserved like sacred relics. In some, she stood with the other Virtues, her expression warm. In others, she was alone, caught mid-laugh, her rose-gold eyes sparkling.
“Lychee Rose Cookie?"
The name slipped from both their lips before they could stop it, a whisper caught between disbelief and dawning understanding.
Silent Salt reached out, his fingers brushing against a particularly worn portrait—one that showed her mid-laugh, her eyes crinkled with joy, her hair adorned with blossoms. The paper was frayed at the edges, as though it had been handled too many times.
The room seemed to pulse around them, the air thick with the scent of old paper and something far sadder—something like longing, like grief, like a love that refused to fade even when its subject had vanished from the world.
And in that moment, they understood.
Shadow Milk hadn't just been searching for answers.
He'd been searching for her.
Then—
A floorboard creaked behind them.
"...I did say no one was allowed in here."
Shadow Milk's voice was light, almost playful—but the undercurrent of something sharp, something dangerous, sent a chill down Burning Spice's spine.
Slowly, very slowly, they turned.
Shadow Milk stood in the doorway, his usual grin absent. His eyes—normally so full of mischief—were dark. Unreadable.
"But since you're already here," he murmured, stepping forward, “why don't we have a little... chat?"
The door swung shut behind him.
And the stars on the walls seemed to dim.

Everyone else with their tailor-made door:
Meanwhile, Burning Spice:
I love this guy so much. Bro, what did the doorhandle do to you?
Everyone else wants exclusive rights to a room, and Burning Spice just wants food. Man knows what he wants.
Couldn't help but slide this in here. They all look so silly together! Silent Salt looks like he's trying to hold Shadow Milk back while everyone else is just deeply concerned.
