A Map for the Crypt of the Conch Commodore 🐚

This is the first sketch of the dungeon map for the Crypt of the Conch Commodore, an adventure i wrote for The Black Hack (and will possibly adapt for OSE, Shadowdark, and other systems). The final resting place of a ruthless military figure that is still venerated as a war hero by his colonialist fellows. It hides many terrible secrets and dangers, but also the treasures he stole in a faraway land.

For some reason my brain’s been sticking to pulp fantasy / sword and sorcery for a while. I read The Black Hack and it was decent, though some things were a little odd (why have things like rations be variable? well, I know why, but I don’t agree with it in OSR because of how important What You Have is). Tried to mangle up a Darkest Dungeon Hack, but the idea kinda crunched up and refused to keep a-rolling. Wrote out some sword and sorcery adventure ideas, like a good old fashioned Evil Wizard in Evil Wizard Tower and Sapient Apes in Ruined Jungle Palace. It just… it compels me. Not sure why!

The broad preference towards the genre establishment of Dungeons and Dragons (or at least Appendix N, if not the system itself) bounds the definitions we work with; other retroclones and revivals like Cepheus and RuneQuest aren’t included, even if they too are ‘old school’. It's the implicit Warhammer OSR game, based on the Black Hack, but with a few nice twists that make it unique and fitting for the setting. Implicit like most of its other notable features, e.g. there are elves, dwarves and others, but they don't have heritage bonuses, and instead receive a bonus depending on how they were brought up inside their culture. The bias is intrinsic with the setting, but defined to highlight the cultures, and that doesn't mean your character might have grown in a different one, of course. I also appreciated how a character's profession is defined by what they relied upon in their lives, like resourcefulness or violence, to inform what they can do. Rules-wise it's a the Black Hack hack with just a few tweaks, most notably the Willpower die, that adds a level of depth to effort and magic use, and the choice of setting aside a couple attributes specifically for combat helps making each one feel more relevant. I particularly like how magic is wielded in this game, and the setting and adventure hooks tables set a well defined mood for the narrative.

L'implicito gioco OSR di Warhammer, basato su the Black Hack, ma con alcune trovate originali che lo rendono unico e adatto a quell'ambientazione. Implicito come molte altre sue caratteristiche, per esempio la presenza di nani, elfi e compagnia che non ricevono bonus per il loro lignaggio, ma per l'ambiente in cui sono stati cresciuti nelle loro culture. L'ambientazione è costruita su una premessa di pregiudizi, ma definiti in modo da approfondire le varie culture e questo non vuol dire che uno deli lignaggi non possa essere stato cresciuto in una diversa. Un altro dettaglio che ho apprezzato è come le professioni dei personaggi dipendano da ciò a cui hanno fatto affidamento nelle loro vite, come l'ingegnosità o la violenza, per definire le capacità che hanno guadagnato. A livello di regole è un hack di the Black Hack con giusto qualche aggiustamento, i più degni di nota il dado Volontà, che aggiunge spessore agli sforzi dei personaggi e all'utilizzo della magia, e la scelta di aggiungere un paio di attributi specifici per il combattimento, che aiuta ad equilibrarne la rilevanza. La magia in particolare trovo sia gestita astutamente e le tabelle di ambientazione e agganci per le avventure impostano un tono molto ben definito per la narrativa.

Generating Attributes For The Black Hack 2e

I admit. I like to hack the generation of attributes/ability scores/etc. of TTRPGs the most. It’s fairly easy to do. I also have to admit that most of the attribute/ability score/etc. generation methods just don’t satisfy that itch, either … and I’ve used a lot over the 30+ years I’ve been playing TTRPGs.
