The Circle

So interesting to see how the world would be if we used technology in that way! Emma Watson plays the main character, also stars Karen Gillian and Tom Hanks. One of my favourite recent movies I've seen by far! 😄

I liked the concept behind the movie, but I'm glad it was just a movie! 😆 I can't imagine being watched 24/7, people would stop being themselves and become false even more than they already do. At least today we have a choice...in the future we may not. I like the security aspect of it, but I feel those in power would end up abusing the system and not using it for it's intended purpose 😕

The Circle was visually pleasing and had several great moments, but the plot had too many glaring issues. Luckily, the actors (Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega) and crew of the movie somewhat compensated for the less than stellar storytelling. It had a solid and realistic premise at first, but about 2/3 of the way though I felt like the plot lost itself among the moral arguments between the good of society vs individual privacy. 

I found the character plot device Mercer (Ellar Coltrane) to be very disappointing. The scene towards the middle of the movie when Mercer visits the company made me literally cringe. I felt like that scene would have built up his character better if the audience felt remorse, not embarrassed. John Boyega’s character seemed very forced in. I can’t even remember the name of John’s character because he felt like such a small and abrupt part of the movie. Watson did good work with what she was given. Several times I questioned her character’s actions and motives, but I think that was part of who her character is. Tom Hanks probably had the strongest acting as well as most consistent character in the film. It’s a shame you see so little of him the first half of the movie at all.

When the movie ended, I was left waiting for one more scene to explain things. I can’t tell if the movie was being more critical of technology & social media companies, or the way we tailor our lives around them… or if both these things are okay and its just select individuals that ruin the fun/safety for everyone else. The real heroes of this film are the people who worked on creating a fictional social media platform/tech company that fit so perfectly inside the movie world it seemed more natural than a movie or show using Facebook or Google could have. 

I give The Circle a “Must See in Theaters” if you own more than 3 Apple devices, or if you really like Emma Watson because she literally is the WHOLE movie. Otherwise catch it on DVD.

Six of my original characters that are part of the comic series I am writing known as “The Circle.”

The Circle is an elite team of superheroes that fight crime and evil within their city.  These are just a few of the characters that make up the colorful cast.

On the top row, from left to right we have:

-The Mad Grenader: one of the leaders of the Circle and destructive force to be reckoned with.  He is an expert with almost any sort of weapon but prefers to use grenades and battle axes.

-Doctor Minerac: the designated “mad scientist” of the team.  He doesn’t do much crime-fighting in the field, but he is a genius who works behind the scenes and crafts many of the Circle’s gadgets and weaponry.  

-The Scarlet Temptress: this sexy seductress is a master manipulator.  Both men and women find it difficult to resist her charm and sex appeal.  She can usually be seen fighting with a whip.

On the bottom row, from left to right:

-Silver: an elegant young lady with the ability to transform into animals.  She is loyal to those closest to her, but desires to be more of an independent and free spirit.  She frequently takes on the form of a wolf.

-Flashback: this spunky gal loves life in the fast lane and can’t stand anything boring or mundane.  She can run at superhuman speeds and is sometime even able to travel through time.

-The Revenant: a mysterious girl with ghost-like abilities.  She can levitate, turn invisible, and has telekinetic powers.  She can appear a little frightening and intimidating to those who don’t know her.
