I bookmarked The Donuttery a long time ago because of all the glowing reviews. The exterior and interior look old and dated but they had many kinds of donuts, much more variety than the average donut shop. In addition to your standard cake, buttermilk and yeast donuts, they have fancy donuts (e.g., crème brulee, red velvet, carrot cake), vegan donuts (many varieties), plus croissant donuts, muffins, croissants, danish, sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and tea. The blueberry donuts are the specialty.

* Strawberry cake donut ($1): unnatural red color, didn’t taste like any real strawberries were used, tasted more like fake strawberry syrup, but the cake was soft, moist and tender.

* Blueberry cake donut: I could see and taste bits of blueberries and the cake was very moist, light and tender. I liked how it wasn’t too sweet even though it had a light glaze, but the flavor was artificial

* Buttermilk bar: The best of the donuts I selected, hefty with some crunch, dense with buttermilk flavor

* Apple cake donut with salted caramel frosting: A denser, drier donut (like an old fashioned donut) with chunks of apple and a thick frosting. I could barely taste the apple and the caramel frosting didn’t have much flavor.

I liked the texture of the donuts but not how artificial they tasted.

There’s free wi-fi and a comfy area on the side for campers.

The Donuttery - Huntington Beach, CA

I must make a confession. There were a few years where I fell off donuts and jumped on the cupcake bandwagon. I feel dirty just saying it. Don't get me wrong, cupcakes are delicious...but cupcakes are just an imitation hybrid. They look like muffins and taste like cake. In walks The Donuttery. The Donuttery (and my friend Janey who brought me to this amazing location) is what pulled me back on course. Most specifically, the Red Velvet Donut with Cream Cheese Frosting. On top of this magnificent creation they have a Blueberry Donut and Strawberry Donut that (the fat kid inside me feels) would be perfect for any breakfast.

This place is 24 hours, but no matter what time I have come to The Donuttery, I have not gotten a stale donut. My trips to see my friend Janey always make me happy because I get to see her...but also because I know I have a Red Velvet Donut in my near future.
