I need these
sweetdoh - San Diego, CA
You know how I know the donut craze is catching on? When you find it at local Farmer's Markets. I recently visited my old neighborhood in San Diego and was so happy to see a donut place had opened as part of the Saturday Farmer's Market.
What I love about this place is that he makes the donuts right in front of you, so when you get them, they're warm, fresh and just absolutely delicious. Michael was an absolute doll. He was so friendly and had a great passion for his product, which you could tell by the taste. The great thing about sweetdoh is that since everything is made right in front of you, you can customize the donut the way you'd like. If you like to see the options, check out their website at www.sweetdoh.net.
I still have the rest of my New York donut trips to post and Austin...I'm very behind! I'll get them up very soon. Hope you all have a great day!
Dough - Brooklyn, New York
So, I'm actually VERY excited for this update because this is my first East Coast donut review! I was in New York for my birthday this past weekend and so I knew I had to cross off all the places I had been dreaming about. So let's start this adventure with what I'm saying is the best yeast donut I've had, in my life, Dough!
I had the Dulce de Leche donut and the Salted Caramel Chocolate donut (pictured above). If you're asking to yourself "how do you eat that neatly?" you don't. Hours later I was licking off remnants of this donut off my phone. Worth it. Not only does this place have amazing gourmet flavors, but the donut itself...has a texture and consistency that I have never seen in a yeast donut. It was fluffy but dense, it was absolutely perfect. I'm drooling just thinking about it.
Someone told me that the New Yorker declared their Blood Orange Donut "a must eat" item. They seemed to be out when I visited but the flavors I got were amazing, I don't feel like I missed out. The place is small, a few stools but most people didn't seem to stick around (aka...you can tell who the tourists were because they were the only ones sitting). I wish this place was closer to me. I honestly may move just to be closer to this shop.
Well kids, I have 3 other places to review, I'll put out another one early next week. Until then, I hope you all have a great weekend!
NY Trip!
Hi everyone, so I'm on my last day in NY. I've been able to cross all 4 donut places on my list, so get ready for massive write ups. I will say, the donuts did not disappoint and the pictures will be drool worthy. Talk to you all soon!
Why does this not exist anymore!?
SLO Donut Company - San Luis Obispo, CA
It was my BFF's birthday this past weekend (if you're into pizza, follow her blog here) and we decided to take a day trip to San Luis Obispo. Like any destination, my first thought is always "I wonder if there's a donut spot I should hit up while I'm here". Well...here you go folks, not only did I find one, I found one that sells Cronuts!
First things first, the interior of this place is beautiful. From it's chalkboards, where you could leave a little mark, to their donut display...I was in love. This place is 24 hours, and I find a lot of donut shops that are 24 hours don't really try to decorate their shop. 9 times out of 10 you feel like you should be guilty, being interrogated under those florescent lights. I know the staff is always a revolving door, but this time I went the staff was very attractive and extremely friendly.
Alright, let's get back to why you guys came here. I never had a cronut, so my review is strictly on taste because I have no comparison to the original. I got an almond glazed cronut with a custard filling (mouthwatering right?), it was amazing. The cronut it's self was exactly what I expected, the taste and flakiness of a croissant but a little denser. The mixture of the cronut, the glaze and custard, man, I wish I had another one right now. The sugar donut was perfectly done. Light, fluffy, no residual oil to coat your mouth, and the perfect amount of sugar. Guys, this place does it's donuts right. They may be new but they know how to please a donut lover.
So if you're ever in SLO, or passing through, you should definitely check this place out. I'm getting a craving just from writing this post. If you guys have any donut shops you love, I'd love to know where. I'm always looking for places to add on my Donut Bucket List.
Top Pot Doughnuts by shunafish
My friend is overnighting me Top Pot donuts this week...I feel like it's Christmas.
Visited SLO Donut Company this weekend and finally got to try a cronut! This one was custard filled, and amazing! Write up coming soon, but until then, enjoy this little video.
Sidecar Doughnuts and Coffee - Costa Mesa, CA
I've been eyeing this place. A lot to be honest. I have a friend that lives very close by to this place and every time in the past I've visited, it's been at a time when they weren't open. Well, fret no more, because I got to experience this little gem hidden in the nook of Costa Mesa.
The interior is beautiful, and the selection of doughnuts they offer is very innovative. I had a Strawberry Shortcake doughnut, but the flavors ranges from Banana Nutella, Maple Bacon (which has now become a staple for all donut shops), Valrhona Chocolate, Huckleberry...and then the one that to me, sounds most interesting (may have to get this next trip)...
Alright, let's get back to my Strawberry Shortcake doughnut, ok? The doughnut itself was extremely light and fluffy, not greasy at all (usually why I migrate towards the baked donuts). The Strawberry glaze was perfect, really tasted like strawberries without overpowers the rest of the toppings (which were whipped cream, what I believe is a little bit of angel food cake, and fresh cut strawberries). I wanted a second one as soon as I finished it, no lie, but I practiced moderation and was content with my one.
So in conclusion, congrats Costa Mesa, you have an amazing doughnut spot. They also serve Stumpton coffee, which, after my trip to Portland, am absolutely obsessed. Thank you all for being so patient in my lack of posts. I don't really have an excuse other than, now that I live in Los Angeles, I keep going to fonuts over and over and I don't know if you guys would want another post of fonuts (even though their donuts are so delicious). Now to look for my next donut adventure location.
