hphm and the enneagram

hello beautiful people! very recently, i became VERY obsessed with the enneagram personality typing system. and since i’m also very obsessed with hphm, i had to connect the two!!!!! disclaimer: i am a total beginner, not an expert in any way shape or form, and it’s pretty hard to type anyone besides yourself with the enneagram, because the system revolves around motivations, and u really can’t know anyone’s secret and true desires and fears. also, i’m aware that i don’t explain like the paths of stress/growth and the triads very well at all. i’m still so new to this that i recommend going to a real website to learn more ab that if ur interested!!!! that being said, this is my take of

the enneagram explained through hphm!!!!:

type 1 - the perfectionist - andre egwu

ones are known as the perfectionists for a reason, they have a set right and wrong way to do everything, and implement their standards on themselves and everyone else. They are organized, have a very clear moral compass, and are very rooted in their opinions. they are typically the “mom friends” and their deepest fear is of being a bad person, or seen as imperfect in any way. Their core motivation is to be good and find the “best” way to do everything. Of all the types, ones are quite often the hardest on themselves when they mess up. i see andre as a type one for a few reasons- first, he takes his role as “style wizard” very seriously, and makes sure all the outfits he designs are flawless in every way. second, he’s got high standards, and isn’t exactly delicate with mc when they disregard his advice, he’s judgemental. he also demands perfection of himself when on the quidditch pitch, making him very competitive. he has a strong sense of justice, as seen from the poor sport sq. he has a vision for his life, and plan to reach it.

type 2 - the helper - rowan khanna

twos are the people who always go the extra mile for everyone, and they hope for the same treatment on return. a two’s biggest fear is of feeling unloved, so they pour out all their love on their friends and offer help on everything, even if said help is unasked for. twos are caring, team players, and will often sacrifice their own wants and needs for the sake of others. they desire to be validated and loved by others more than anything else. I see rowan as a two because they are eager to help the mc in every way that they can. rowan sometimes attributes their self-worth in terms of how helpful they can be to the mc, and as seen in years 5 and 6, rowan admits how much they hate feeling like the mc doesn’t need them anymore. in the enneagram path of stress, twos move down to negative traits of type 8, the challenger and become more assertive and obviously angry. this is demonstrated in the way rowan aggressively lashes out at ben sometimes. likewise, when twos move along the path of growth, they display more positive traits of type 4, the individualist, and rowan is often at their best when comfortable in how unique they can be.

type 3 - the achiever - diego caplan

type threes are ambitious, goal-oriented, and always trying move up in the world. their greatest desire is attention and recognition, while their deepest fear is being perceived as worthless. their schedules are often booked to the max and they are very image conscious. they are incredibly productive and (along with twos and fours) are part of the heart triad and tend to make decisions based on their feelings. threes are also very charismatic and charming. i think that diego is a type 3 because of his ambition and his charisma, but also because of the insecurity we see in the dueling dancing and diego sq, we can see that diego hates the idea of anyone seeing him fail and lose the dancing contest. in general, it’s no secret that diego likes to win.

type 4 - the individualist - tulip karasu

what type fours want the most is to be able to express themselves and proclaim their uniqueness to the world. what they fear the most is that they are fundamentally broken and unable to reach the same happiness as everyone else. fours are among the most creative people you will ever meet and, honestly, they are probably the quirkiest type (and they REALLY want you to know it!!!) fours are in a lot of inner conflict because they often long to be loved and validated, while simultaneously they want to be left alone and unbothered. they want to be as authentic as possible, and can be the most melancholy of the types at times. i think tulip is a four because of her obvious uniqueness, and complete pride over it. she also fears that something is actually wrong deep within herself, and that it prevents her from establishing connections with friends and family that everyone else seems to be making. tulip is also seen multiple times getting some creative self expression out, even if she admits she’s not very good at artistic things like drawing and writing. the important thing is that she’s doing something creative and trying those things anyway.

other type 4s imo - badeea ali, ismelda murk, beatrice haywood

type 5 - the investigator - liz tuttle

type fives are your classic intellectual minimalist type. they’re your “spend hours researching before making a statement type” and they get overwhelmed by their needs and their loved ones’ needs, and often need to take some moments to prepare before presenting anything. they are very independent, and the most thoughtful of all the types. they desire to understand the world around them as fully as possible. they are typically introverted, and gain their energy and drive by learning more about the things that impassion them. they are a part of the head triad (with sixes and sevens as well) and so they make most of their decisions based on what they think rather than feel. i see liz as a 5 because she’s very withdrawn from the outside world, preferring to learn more about creatures and only really talking to a handful of people she trusts. she’s often overwhelmed by the needs of people and likes to take some time with her creatures and learning to remove that stress.

other type 5s imo - murphy mcnully

type 6 - the loyalist - ben copper

enneagram sizes are motivated by their desire for safety and security. They have a tendency to be overly anxious and overthink things, but they are incredibly loyal and supportive to the people they trust. They are often prepared for every worst case scenario, and are organized planners who pay close attention to details. Their greatest fear is being unprepared for danger. sixes value trust more then anything else, they don’t break promises or spill secrets. i find ben to be very 6-like because of his early anxiety and proneness to exaggerate danger and overthink simple things. even though ben develops and changes more than any other character in the series, one thing that remains constant about him is his loyalty to mc. sixes can fluctuate between being phobic, where they are open and expressive about their vulnerabilities as ben is in the early years, and counter-phobic, or putting on a tough exterior to hide their vulnerabilities as ben does in later years. sixes sometimes struggle with being pessimistic and suspicious, just like ben.

other type 6s imo - levi kidd, bill weasley

type 7 - the enthusiast - alanza alves

sevens fear missing out, boredom, and being stuck in a set routine forever. They crave fun, excitement and new experiences. sevens are known for being bubbly and energetic, and almost childlike at times. they are very optimistic, and can get frustrated when the people around them will simply refuse to look on the bright side. sevens are popular and well-liked, often struggle with commitment, and become scatter-brained at times. alanza is a textbook seven- she joined an exchange program to shake things up and try new things, she enjoys lifting mc up and distracting them with fun and stress relieving activities, amd she very talented at many things, while having no set one hobby or interest she fixates on.

other type 7s imo - fred & george weasley, duncan ashe, tonks

type 8 - the challenger - merula snyde

enneagram 8s are loud and proud, when they have something on their mind they let you know it. their biggest fear is of being controlled, so they become as assertive and aggressive as they possibly can be to counter that fear. eights are independent, confident, and strong-willed. they care intensely about people and things they are passionate about, and will protect those things. eights have a particularly strong sense of self and are natural leaders. i see merula as an eight not only because of her assertiveness and hatred of being told what to do, but also because of her decision making process. eights are in the gut triad (with type nines and type ones), and so they tend to make their decisions based on their instinct. merula has been known to make rash decisions, and they are sometimes catastrophic, but also sometimes very helpful.

type 9 - the peacemaker - barnaby lee

enneagram 9s are known for being easygoing, agreeable, and indecisive. type nines fear loss and separation, and their greatest desire is to have peace of mind and inner stability. nines will go to extreme lengths to avoid conflict, frequently throwing their own wants out the window in order to keep the peace. 9s are natural mediators, and have a great ability to see multiple perspectives. due to constantly going along with what others want, nines can often become out of tune with their own emotions and desires, and very unsure of what they themselves actually want. nines long to feel like their presence matters, and will often space out and daydream. i think barnaby is a nine because of his hatred of conflict seen in the library scene, and his desperation to deescalate the situation and keep the peace. barnaby is also very agreeable, and very submissive under merula’s leadership. despite this, nines may think that they want to be told what to do, but when this actually happens, others might find them stubborn and passive aggressive, just as it’s clear barnaby really does not want to be controlled by anyone. barnaby will also sacrifice his needs for others’, taking multiple spells for people throughout the game.

They enjoy being on stage in the spotlight. Social Threes know how to climb the social ladder and achieve success. These are the most competitive and most aggressive of the Threes. They have a driving need to look good and possess a corporate or sales mentality.
