I don’t agree with a lot of the heartstopper article but I think you’re misunderstanding the point about Ben. It’s not that Ben as he is in canon deserves redemption, it’s that the writer thinks that Ben shouldn’t have been written that way in the first place, that there was a better way to explore the nuances of being closeted than making Ben the kind of person who assaults his boyfriend. Ben was shitty af but the real problem lies with the writers who made that choice to make him that level of awful when they could have taken a different route to show the differences between Nick and Ben.

I mean yes, you can tell a similar story without making Ben abusive, but people who are exactly like Ben exist in real life and just because someone is LGBTQIA+, doesn't mean they can't be abusive/a bad person, so I don't see how it's wrong to depict that.
