Idk how much this has been discussed before, but I've heard a lot of argument about what The Gray exactly is meant to be, while it's safe to say there's no 1:1 real-world equivalent, I've heard it likened to certain real-world chemical warfare tactics such as tear gas. But, I was listening to a video essay on Libby, Montana and came to a realization.
It's asbestos.
First off, I know asbestos is a dust, not a gas, but as I said before, no real-world material is going to be perfectly 1:1. There are some notable differences: asbestos is not a gas, airborne asbestos is not visible while the Gray is, and asbestos was used in many products and structures while the Gray was not, etc. But I do think that this is the closest substance to which the Gray can be compared in the real world.
Both are associated heavily with the mining industry, with asbestos contamination a prevalent issue in vermiculite mines, both of which are somewhat remedied by the use of industrial ventilation. Both of them, while being prevalent in the mines, spread to the wider settlements around the mines and cause health issues for the people living there. Long-term exposure to these substances causes chronic lung disease (Lung Blight, Asbestosis) and can lead to an illness of the lungs that progresses rapidly, is largely untreatable, and usually fatal (Viktor's S1 diagnosis, mesothelioma).
Again, while it's not 1:1, I definitely think asbestos was a dominant inspiration of the Gray, although I am not versed in any of the LoL lore that wasn't included in Arcane, so I'd be interested to hear if there's anything else that further confirms or contradicts this.
Anyway that's horrifying.
New DPxDC headcanon for y'alls!
Ghosts (in the Danny Phantom sense) are typically part of The Gray.
For those not privy to DC canon and lore, The Gray is like The Green or The Red, but for fungi.
And for those who don't know what The Green or The Red are, they are basically forces that contain, connect, and empower all of certain kinds of life. The Green has domain over plant life, The Red contains all animal life (including humans), The Gray is associated with fungi, and there are other such forces within the DC universe that hold domain over other forms of life too. (The Clear and aquatic life, The Divided and microbial life, etc.) These entities are also where some characters within the DC universe derive their powers from. (Poison Ivy and Swamp Thing derive their powers from The Green, while characters like Beast Boy and Vixen draw their powers from The Red, etc.)
So that's my new headcanon. Feel free to take this information and do what you will with it!
The Grey
All I could find regarding the grey for a fanfiction and some questions I have about how it is depicted in S1 and S2. But let's start by something interesting! This is very disorganised so I'm sorry.
So I've recently come to the realisation that The Grey is probably called that because Kindred, a spirit that represents the twin essences of death (Runeterra's very own Grim Reaper), is also nicknamed the Grey Man.

The Kindred
The Taker
The Spirit of Death
The Eternal Hunters
The Two Hunters
The Educated Lamb of Light
The Great Black Wolf

Hey whats that fic where vi and Caitlin are talking about when they gassed zaun? Like vi is like we killed over 500 people that's completely fucked and Caitlin is like promise to never forgive me
As much as I liked Caitlyn's character far more in s2 bc they made her a lot more complex -
I haven't seen anyone else talking about how Caitlyn was basically desecrating the memory of her mother and her family's life's work by what she did with the Gray.
Caitlyn's family designed the ventilation shafts and systems in order to disperse the Gray bc "the people of the underground deserved to breathe" and Caitlyn took those designs and good intentions and weaponized them against the very people they were supposed to help for her own crusade.
(whether those designs actually made more than a dent in the underground pollution is another matter bc all I can think about is where everyone from topside has to wear breathing masks when they went underground in s1)
