Some of you have never climbed the 7,000 steps to get to High Hrothgar and it shows.

17.12.25 | clearing out my wip folder with yet another edition of skyrim dudes in profile: this time i'm trying to give some greater variety to lost grandad club the greybeards.

since we can only speak with arngeir, the others do feel a little flat so i've tried to give them some individuality. i wanted to see the guys who raised ulfric, at least in part.

it took me a couple of tries to find a version of borri that i liked and i ended up tearing through the page so i had to draw the final version all squished up in front of einarth and so it looks like einarth is just glaring daggers into the back of borri's head 😆 and they can't talk without using the thu'um so they're just thinking those things at each other really hard.

(i headcanon that they'd develop some kind of sign language to communicate mundane things to one another but you can't do that when one guy is facing the other way)

"Another case of why not, they might count. I'm submitting them as a group. They are reclusive for religious reasons. Their order follows the Way of the Voice, which means pacifism unless in self-defense, and using the power of the Thu'um only for worship. Their voices are too powerful (they can make the ground quake and could theoretically kill someone by accident), so everyone except for Arngeir is silent.

High Hrothgar (their monastery) sits atop the tallest mountain, and they seemingly don't allow just anyone inside. Despite the fact climbing all the way there seems to be a popular pilgrimage to do. The Greybeards mentor individuals that show talent with the Thu'um, one NPC is their past student. They spend most of the day meditating, keeping to the monastery's interior and their secluded courtyard. They are notoriously uninvolved in current events, and I assume they have kept exclusively to High Hrothgar ever since filling in for the previous generation of old sages. It's not explicitly stated that their vows prevent them from wandering out or anything, they just never do.

At one point in the game they do host a whole diplomatic meeting, as the neutral party. That is an exceptional event, and obviously Arngeir is the mediator.

Propaganda:

Their lifestyle revolves around never leaving home and rarely interacting with outsiders. Also they're cool.

There is a villager NPC who's been climbing all the way up (7000 steps) to bring them supplies. He just leaves the package at the doorstep and has never even seen the Greybeards.

When they summon you to High Hrotghar, they just shout in a way that can be heard all across the province. More efficient than sending a courier, I guess.

Since her lodging is also her workplace, she simply never leaves; if she needs something she has it brought to her.

“Shut-in at the Lavish Chateau where she is the owner and primary performer/entertainer because she is too terrified of outdoor spaces to ever brave them. I don’t think there’s an official canon length of time that she spent there but it was a minimum of twenty years. 

I love that she’s an extremely successful stage performer AND agoraphobic. So often characters are either Anxious or Confident with no in-between, but she gets to be more complicated than that. Also, canonically has an absolutely stunning voice.” - anonymous submitter

“At the Lavish Chateau, a classy inn/ hotel/ bordello in the port city of Nicodranas, for roughly two decades. The why is (to the best of my knowledge) never explicitly stated, but might have to do with societal prejudice against tieflings (she alludes to the world having been ‘unkind’ to her), or with the abrupt disappearance of her daughter’s father, who she had been planning to marry. In any case, she struggles greatly to leave her home/workplace where she feels safe, and Word of God (/Word of DM) has explicitly described her as having agoraphobia.

More seriously, she’s a famous, highly respected, and widely desired courtesan and performer despite the fact that she hasn’t been able to force herself to step outside in years. The Greybeards held a ceremony recognizing me as ‘Dovahkiin’. Apparently I’m Ysmir, Which would technically make me Talos.
