Hugh Mackay book review for The Big Issue
The inner Self (for Barbara)...
The more often he feels without acting, the less he will be ever able to act, and, in the long run, the less he will be able to feel.
C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
I am just starting to read this. I really enjoyed the first part of it. Though some of it is really confusing. They encourage you to take martial arts if that’s possible for the individual. Not to sure I like the whole idea of being in a class with that stuff though. I would rather have a one on one how to thing. Now I’m wondering if I should buy books on martial arts to train my self.
I really like the explanations about the self in here too. Like how one should respect the body and make sure you are fed. Also about the mental aspects of the self is quite intriguing to me. It seems lots mistake the term Fylgja as a persons spiritual animal. In fact it is not. This book says it is the animal form showing the souls inner nature and the persons condition. It is usually a guardian, whose might works both in magickal and in physical struggles. It also says that a Fylgja is also like a seeing eye dog, it can sense danger and allow one to protect ones self by listening to your own instincts but that any kind of advice given should not be taken as that’s what you should do because the advice given from the Fylgja is from an animal perspective and is primal in origin. In other words, don’t go and attack someone just because you get the urge to. Usually a Fylgja appears in an animal form. It represents your sense of an attack coming in much of the same way a dog senses trouble is near. Basically, it is ones instincts.
I really love the other explanations in this book so far! It’s really got me thinking about things magickally and spiritually. I can’t wait to learn more from this book!
