They’re both scared of two things, really - the extent of their own feelings for the other, and that they are not lovable to receive such love in return.

That’s why “You’re safe” resonates. To me, it’s the most important line in the show. It’s two words which meets them where they’re at. You’re safe to feel unlovable. You’re safe to feel scared - and we can work through that together.

I like that it’s spoken by Stede, but there’s an argument that it’s also reinterpreted and remade by Ed.

Alongside “I’ll never leave you again”, the tone is softer and doesn’t fit Stede’s actual emotional state at that moment. If Stede does say the words out loud, Ed receives them as he needs to hear them - reimagined through his own psyche, more gently spoken, as he understands their significance to his emotional growth.

Meaning here is created by both, because “You’re safe” is reciprocal. If Ed is safe to be loved, then he is safe to give Stede the love he deserves in return, and vice versa.

They are both each other’s safety, and soft place to fall, and they no longer need to be scared.

I’m forever grateful in how they handled this scene.

A lesser show might’ve had Merstede swim to the surface holding onto Ed, literally rescuing him. As it is, they don’t even touch, yet it’s so visually powerful. The mirroring, which says, I see you, I am you, “you’re safe”.

But most importantly, the narrative allowing Ed agency to decide for himself whether to live or die after being offered emotional safety.

Later, Ed tells Stede, “You saved my life.” Whilst Stede’s voice, handhold, and little chest thumps is certainly a catalyst, it’s Ed who reaches out, undoes his rope, knocks that ring, mirrors back, and takes it over the line.

It’s just the most perfect moment of tv, and most days, I still can’t believe it exists.

The crew in the jail cell on the Red Flag are in their own sort of Gravy Basket parallel. They aren’t dead yet, but there’s possibly only a little life left for them. They’re in a waiting area, counting down to a deadline maybe. It’s just a matter of time… they’re reconciled to the inevitable.

And Stede just refuses to accept he can’t save them with the weaponising of camomile tea. He’s in emotional pain from their actions, and has no idea if the escape plan will work, but they have to try. Yet Stede alone doesn’t save the crew. It’s a joint effort. They listen and do and play to their strengths, but it’s Stede’s belief which gives them the hope to attempt it.

They try together, and succeed.

Meanwhile, Ed is in his own Gravy Basket purgatory. He’s not quite dead yet, but there’s very little life left. He’s sinking into the black ocean of a dying mind, counting down. There’s a deadline here too… it’s probably only a matter of seconds… he’s reconciled to the inevitable…

…Ed’s fight to live begins by Stede removing the face shroud; daring to look death, Ed’s death, in the face. It’s the tiniest spark of Ed knowing he’s not alone, and it’s enough. And once Stede hears faint knocking, sees a hint of life in Ed’s hand, Stede refuses to accept he cannot be saved. Stede will stare death down. He’s going to call and shake until… And Ed is going to scream and let go of that weight and have his Merstede vision. Like with the crew, Stede alone doesn’t save Ed. It’s a joint effort, but Stede brings the hope.

Together they try with everything they have, and Ed lives.

I’ve said before I find Ed’s gravy basket list of reasons to live pretty tragic. But I was thinking again about ‘warmth’, which is the one that really gets to me.

Warmth is to be alive. Ed wants the very essence of life. He’s perhaps not looking to acquire warmth, he wants to generate warmth. A beating heart, a living brain. So Ed is answering the opposite of what he perceives he might be now - cold, near death. He’s Romeo, as Juliet notices ‘Thy lips are warm’, the final subtle signs of ebbing life. Ed wants the very edges of existence if that’s all he can have.

What do you like about living? …Living.

It’s the purest of answers, really. Ed really does want to live.
