oh, sure! catherine ‘wren’ lacey is a character from my perpetually shelved wip half-dead hope, a supernatural semi dark academia with next to no men in it.

wren is the ex best friend of the protagonist, jackie keats, with both having grown up in the same small fuck-off nowhere town and thus sort of bonding through convenience. over time, their friendship started to stray, through no real fault of either but rather just growing up. wren often tried to rekindle it, but jackie didn’t want to, too wrapped up in her own teenage ‘im too good for this town and too good for these people’ anguish. when university application time rolled around, jackie applied for a really prestigious one outside of town - and so did wren. both ended up getting in, which to wren meant a chance to get close to jackie again and to jackie meant a chance to cut her ties to home once and for all.

at uni, wren befriends a bunch of the other main characters, aka second years piper macpherson (well, she’s redoing the year), birdie bartlett, beth tián, and, of course, the infamous florence artherton. she tries to approach jackie too, but jackie is again too busy being edgy and staring at florence and not wanting wren to remind her of home and wondering how wren got an in with all of them (answer: wren is a genuinely nice person).

if it isn’t obvious by now that wren has a massive crush on jackie, well. it’s not obvious to jackie either !

unfortunately, everything comes to a terrible halt when the other girls one day pull jackie aside and reveal to her, as wren’s oldest friend, a secret they don’t know what to do with: wren died at a new year’s eve party few nights ago (details saved for if i ever properly write this). they didn’t mean for it to happen, but wren died, and they covered for it, and beth carried her body to the woods, and florence had them bury it.

so how the fuck is she still turning up to class?

#anyway as the story continues we see wren’s personality start to unravel with it #death will do that to you #her slightly obsessive crush on jackie scales until it’s just. an obsession. and love (much like that quote i rbed) starts to rot her from #the inside out #anyway. the other girlies keep trying to figure out how wren came back which is why they turn to jackie. like she’d have any insight #it’s like in hamlet when the guards are like oh you’re a scholar horatio right? surely that gives you the credentials to speak to ghosts #like. pleased you remembered. not my forte though #so anyway the girlies are on a hunt to figure out how wren came back and a lot of them start to morally break in the process #(cue most of the plot)#but (spoiler!) maybe they’re focusing on the wrong thing. maybe they shouldn’t be looking at how wren came back but why.#anyway yeah that’s half dead hope and wren in a nutshell. i should revisit it but i can only really write that when im feeling pretentious #talking with the wind #wren lacey #half dead hope #if you have any more questions feel free to ask <3
