The joiners in Southampton 10/08/18
Joyce Manor night two
I Want To Play Common People (Heat 3) at The Joiners, Southampton
Last night 5 bands played The Joiners all hoping to earn a place at Common People Festival in Southampton! I didn’t really know what to expect from the evening as I had never listened to any of the bands before, but it was a great evening.
Regal as Kings kicked off the evening, but I only managed to see the last couple of songs. One thing I picked up from the band was the talent that lead singer Charlotte had, with an incredible range and tone, she gave the music so much life from her performance alone.

The second act to grace the Joiners stage was alternative singer-songwriter Freya Beer. There was nothing complicated about the music she was playing, simple drum beats and repetitive guitar riffs made up most of her songs, but it sounded amazing. Her voice at times resembled Ellie from Wolf Alice, with her ability to go between a whispered conversational tone and beautifully sung vocals with ease. It gave her performance a depth that was incredible for someone at such an early stage in her career.

Pivotal came on third, a local rock band so local, that you can find drummer Ollie Chandler working in The Brook. This set was the first time of the evening the venue actually looked busy. With their dark post-punk sound, you can tell straight away that they take influence from bands like Interpol. With their mixture of synths, dark guitar riffs, and deep vocals, they have definitely found their sound and god do they sound good! Lead singer Lee’s voice is so distinctive, there are very few singers over the years to have such a deep tone. I can only really compare it to Editors’ Tom Smith and Lee is definitely as good! I would like to mention the true Pivotal fans who gave out pieces of paper with Pivotal support written on to the crowd before the set, you certainly added to the atmosphere created by the band.

The next band on stage, the ones who provided the drum kit, were Posh Ellen. Their facebook page says “We make loud drunk tunes for loud drunk people” and I’ve never read a more true statement. They instantly captured the whole room with their loud rock. Their songs were packed full of loud punchy guitar riffs and powerful vocals, they truly created an amazing atmosphere. My personal highlight was their song ‘Maddie’, with a fuzzy guitar riff and lead vocalist Dan screaming ‘Tell me where you've been” into the mic repeatedly throughout the song, this is definitely a favourite for the headbangers.

The final act of the night was Blue Canary, who brought the noise down by a few decibels. Their folk-inspired indie rock has a very original sound, with grubby guitar riffs mixed with tuneful harmonies. ‘A Sickening Crack’ is a good example of the bands peculiarly arranged songs, but it sounds so good. They were joined by Dan from another of Southampton’s up and coming indie bands, The Lost Boys. This was also their first show since they released their debut album ‘In Electric Bethlehem’ in February.

The whole point of the night was to pick a band to play at Common People. With Radio 6 DJ Rob Da Bank and BBC Introducing Solent presenter Steph Newenhouse.
They could not decide on one band to win, so the winners were Posh Ellen and Pivotal!
Well done to all the bands who played the night, you all played fantastic sets and I am glad that I didn’t have to make the decision. Also, a massive congratulations to Posh Ellen and Pivotal for winning and good luck for your sets at Common People!
