I just love how Puck starts out with a glamorized idea of herself alone and defiant on the beach and then doesn’t hesitate to swap that image for the alternate winning strategy of “stick as close to Sean as possible for as long as possible.”
Years ago I read the Scorpio races for the first time, and I still read it every couple years. This year during my reread however, I’ve come to the conclusion that obviously this is my favorite book, and I desperately needed more content and discussions. I know this is about 10 years late, but I’m looking for every Scorpio Races fan that’s out there!!!

Another log hissed and snapped as Mr. Kendrick fed it into the firepit. With the sun long ago sunk beneath the horizon, the summer day’s sweltering heat had given way to a cozy chill. Soft jazz filled the gaps in conversation; a Bluetooth speaker nestled in an alcove by the backdoor relayed the living room’s stereo. Half-empty serving trays cluttered the center of the table: burgers and hot dogs, buns, potato salad, cole slaw, potato chips, corn on the cob... Despite how jam-packed the family’s day had been, their parents had made certain the family ate heartily. The days ahead promised to only be more hectic.
Mr. Kendrick patted his wife’s shoulder before settling back into his seat. “Guests begin arriving tomorrow,” he drawled, looking toward Trinity and her fiancé. They were cuddled together in a love seat that Matt had dragged over to the table. “There’s still room in the guest house if your folks would rather not spend on a hotel.”
Matt shook his head. “They’re pretty set on a hotel room. Dad doesn’t like imposing, and I think they’re worried I’ll come back a mess after my bachelor party.”
The screen door screeched as someone slid it along the track. “Sorry I’m late,” Bal said. Another protesting squeal as he shut it behind him. “My flight came into Logan an hour late, and Hertz lost my reservation again. I think that’s four times now!” His free hand fussing with the buttons of his jacket, Bal gazed at the empty place setting beside Hayden. “Did I miss dinner?”
“Do you feel brave?”
The mare goddess had told me to make another wish. I feels as thin as a thread to me now, that gift og a wish. I remember the years when it felt like a promise. “I don’t know what I feel, Puck.”
Puck unfolds her arms just enough to keep her balance as she leans to me, and when we kiss, she closes her eyes.
Happy Scorpio Races everyone!
asdhghdsgds "we're in training" what does that even MEAN
I’ve always taken it to mean “we’re learning how to be in a relationship”
So I’m giving the book a re-listen, and I’ve decided that Sean Kendrick is an island witch (whether he knows it or not). But there’s some ingrained magic there, with his spit and whispers.
“Magic,” says Holly.“Is a snaffle bit magic?” I ask him.“All I know is that when I whisper to dirt, my conversations are less than meaningful.”
I’m 100% behind a magical Sean Kendrick???? I love that his magic (for what he has is magic and not at all like a snaffle bit) is tied to the island and to the horses, like a bridge through the ages, stretching all the way back past the sea cave. It comes from love, from oneness, from being, and so it flows two ways. His touch is what Puck calls “a sort of fearful magic,” and perhaps it is because it’s a connection, a binding, and it demands something of you in return. For is not Trust a most powerful magic, indeed?
And oh, oh, alternately his magic could make him a sweet horse-whispering prickly anemone driftwood FAIRY prince and would that not be magnificent???? (I just read the very aesthetic An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson so I’m all about FAIRIES right now SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME A SEAN KENDRICK FAIRY PRINCE AU THANKYOUSOMUCH. )
