This political cartoon by Bill Pause during the 1960 Presidential campaign depicted Republican nominee, Vice President Richard Nixon, and Democratic nominee, Senator John F. Kennedy, during their early days in Congress when they were (real-life) friendly next-door neighbors in their Congressional office building.
After Pause sent Kennedy a signed copy, Kennedy asked Nixon, now his rival and opponent in the 1960 Presidential election, to also sign the cartoon, which the Vice President was happy to do:
"To my friend & neighbor Jack Kennedy
with best wishes for almost everything!
From Dick Nixon"
Kennedy narrowly defeated Nixon for the Presidency in November 1960. The signed cartoon of Kennedy and Nixon was hung on the wall of the office of JFK's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, just outside the Oval Office where it remained throughout the 1,036 days of the Kennedy Administration.
