July 7th 12th, 2016: "The Leap"/"Clean Break"
Here we go. the leap.
"Batgirl. Wow. I mean, I ship him with Starfire. But whatever makes him happy... I guess."
Nightwing (2016) Vol. 4: The Leap. Nightwing #98. "A Nite To Remember."
You know you're big in DC when you get an imp.
But with Foggy…Matt gets to be blind. The static can wash through his ears, his skin, become white noise that fizzes and pops in the back of his mind. Matt can navigate the world with his fingers perched in the soft crook of Foggy’s elbow, cane click-clacking in time with the catch in Foggy’s voice as he paints the world in fire-works of colour. Foggy laughs and the dark corners become light. He jokes and teases and crowds part, like Moses to the red sea, Foggy commands the leaves as they fall in spirals, he calls the birds to brush the sky with their wings, he heats dust motes to whirlwinds of flavour. Blindness with Foggy is light and colour, its shifting patterns that speak in full sentences and details placed gently in his palm. Matt feels himself lean into the softness, like he is deliberately stepping into quicksand, turning his back to the warnings that Stick is spitting in his ear.
Ah, sorry Brother Dusk...
...the middle throne is currently having a small existential and/or parenting crisis and can't answer right now...
...perhaps we could revisit the discussion later?
Nightwing #100
Dick Grayson being one of the most loved and counted on heroes in the DC universe by other heroes isn’t just because he’s earned that faith by always showing up. Plenty of other heroes can be counted on to show up and save the day, but they’re not as beloved by the people around them as Dick is. Batman is just as reliable to help as Nightwing is, but Bruce doesn’t get the same level of trust as Dick does.
What sets Dick apart is how willing he is to trust others. Bruce builds reliance from others while Dick builds relationships. No one hesitates to ask Dick for help because they know not only will he show up, he’ll be happy about it. He’ll ask you for help next time he needs it too, because he knows that trust goes both ways.
I saw a post the other day about how Dick is confident without arrogance and I think that unique humility Dick has is what makes him so loved by others. Dick prides himself on his friendships. He knows his biggest strength is having people he can trust with his life. Dick knows he can always leap, he can always take the big risk to help people, because there will always be someone on the other side to catch him. Doesn’t matter if it’s someone from the Batfamily, a super, a speedster, a titan, or one of any other groups he’s been part of. There will always be someone to catch him because he’s always there to catch other people. Dick can be a safety net because he knows there’s a net below him. It’s nets all the way down because that’s what Dick does, he inspires everyone around him be a net.
This is why Nightwing is my favorite hero. He inspires people to be better in a way that’s only rivaled by Superman. He is the platonic ideal of what a hero should be. He always leaps. And he always will.
