I would love to read amicus, however, I am not at the stage of law school where I am ready for it to read about it yet. which is a shame, because you're such an excellent writer. also I fear you, writing about your experience in fic, I could never. [although I am going to presume that the marauders law school experience is slightly more chaotic than my own - and probably yours, too]
I would argue that writing about it is one of the key ways I am getting through law school 😂 I started planning this story when I first started my classes, but didn’t have the nerve to start it until I’d finished my first year, and at this rate, it’ll get me all the way through my fourth year if I’m not strategic about things lol.
Honestly though, I knew when I started writing it that most of the ~law school~ aspects of it were going to be background material to the plot I had in mind—the gang all has torts together, people get put into partnerships to write papers, they have to deliver a mock argument to a panel of judges that’s made of their classmates, etc.
As much as law school is important to the plot, it wasn’t ever meant to be the plot, if that makes sense, because to your point, I’m not sure if I could’ve handled writing an aggressive transcription of what was happening day in and day out in my classes.
For the sake of the story, and because I didn’t need to write too much of my own life into it, I’d say their law school experience itself is actually significantly milder/less chaotic than mine has been, and if I’m being really honest with myself, it’s because I needed to write about someone having a more normal law school experience than I’ve had thus far to be able to believe it could actually happen.
One of the other things I’ve realized as I’ve been writing this is that a fair amount of people reading it aren’t from the U.S. or don’t have exposure to what American law schools are like, which has brought about loads of fun conversations.
I’d pretty much only ever considered practicing in one of two countries so I didn’t know a ton about legal systems internationally coming into this story, but since starting it I’ve discovered a whole host of similarities and differences between others’ law school experiences and my own. (eg: being able to start the degree as soon as you’ve finished your equivalent of high school/GED, shorter programs, no evening sections, different types of degrees conferred upon finishing, etc)
Anyway, all of this is to say—thank you!
I know my stories aren’t for everyone in the first place, but it’s very kind of you to say that you’d like to read it because you enjoy my writing.
I hope you’ve got time/energy/bandwidth to be reading for fun regardless while you’re in school, and if you eventually end up back on my page for amicus, I hope you love it!
