also we need more academics and (proper) cultural critics weighing in on popular culture again. i found emily wilsons review of the odessey to be a breath of fresh air in that it was an actually intelligent interrogation of the film. filmbros who lick the heel of nolan are blinded by the fact the writing in that movie WAS terrible. plus everyone is wilfully being a little bitch to her by yapping that an adaptation doesn’t have to follow the source material to the letter. she knows. she clearly agrees with you if you actually took the time to read and understand her review. instead what she was saying was that nolan’s film didn’t capture the essential spirit of its source material. it’s wearing the robes of the odessey but it’s doesn’t have its soul. i agree with her on that, for the most part. nolan’s major failure as a director is that he is too interested in sleek modernity and technical excellence and not enough interested in the actual interiority of his characters. this failure trails all his films.
