An update, of sorts

Alas, I’m afraid I don’t have an episode for you. But! I do have a show! It’s an almost entirely new show team, as although I love this team with everything I have they are all final year students, and a show would be too much.

@ethicstownpod is quite different to a modern adaptation of a gothic novel, but a lot of the good things I wanted to put into Jekyll and Hyde you’ll also find in Ethics Town! We’re still on spoilers lockdown right now, but here are just a few things you might like about this new show if you were interested in a Jekyll and Hyde adaptation:

Ghost stories! I promise you’ll hear some good ghost stories.

Horror! Despite our current vibrant trans pride profile picture it is a horror podcast.

A soft boy with nice hair wondering about morality. I love a soft boy with nice hair who wonders about morality!

So much queer content! There are three characters in particular whose orientation and experiences I’ve put so much attention and love into. I’ve never had the chance to write about being aroace in such great depth before, and whilst you won’t get to hear a lot from this character for a while I’m so excited about them.

Subhi! The most wonderful human person who was going to play Lanyon is now in this show!

Our lovely Dr Jekyll, Mick, is composing us some music!

Philosophy! In fact, now there’s even more philosophy!

But there are also lots of lovely new things! New cast, who mean the whole entire world to me. New sound designer who isn’t me, thank goodness! New scale! Ethics Town is a network show! And, of course, new premise: Tired and wired Ethics local January Johnson makes a series of emergency broadcasts concerning the behaviour of his town’s new mayor.

I still feel bad that this show never got made, it was and is a lot of fun, but I have no regrets. I got to meet and work with some wonderful people, and I learned so much, enough to make a proper, budgeted, open-auditioned, honest-to-goodness show less than a year later. I love Jekyll and Hyde, but I love this too, and I hope some of you will!

Gabriel has the, self proclaimed, 'most mundane life it is possible to live'. His closest friend is a literal mad scientist, their mutual friend keeps lying to him about it, and he has a habit of playing amateur detective in his free time, but that's all pretty regular stuff, right? If you don't feel any different than you did yesterday can you really say anything important has happened to you?

Oh gosh, another adaptation, am I right? So: what’s new?

I know, I know, we’ve all seen a million Jekyll and Hyde adaptations that just don’t quite hit the mark; how can I prove this one will be any different? Truth be told, I can’t! Some of you might not like some of the big character choices I’ve made; some of you won’t like the aspects of the plot I’ve focused in on, or decided to exclude. But! there’s a load of fun stuff in there, so here’s some spoiler-free heads up!

Queer characters: fictional podcasts are (generally) by the gays for the gays, and this one’s no exception! We’ve got an almost entirely queer team working on the show, and every character whose sexuality is explicitly stated is (umbrella term) gay. In the case of Jekyll and Hyde, having explicitly, openly gay characters does impact on the plot and some of the themes, but hey! we’ve adapted; that’s what an adaptation is for!

Women: that’s it. The original was severely lacking in women. Every piece of media is, in fact, improved by the addition of non-sexualised lesbians!

Cool, modern stuff: this is a 21st century adaptation! Which means we have names for romantic orientations, better mental health care, and rights for women! As well as microwaves, mobile phones, and sad monologues delivered on buses (But shh, that was almost a spoiler!).

An (almost) canon Dr Jekyll: adaptations have a tendency to make Dr Jekyll a 20-something twink, and I won’t stand for it! The cast are all 20-something, however, so what I have to offer you is mid-30s not-at-all-a-twink Dr Jekyll. This is a depressed, tired, chunky boy. I did, however, mistakenly assume he had blond hair the first time I ready the novella five years ago, so he now has gorgeous, blond curls for absolutely no reason. (We’ll call it an homage to his voice actor, who has lovely blond hair!)

A good, fun time: I love gothic lit. I love adaptations (when they’re done a certain way). I’ve put together a team who loves these things, too. I’m not trying to be the next Robert Louis Stevenson, or even the next Jonny Sims. I just wanted to make something that I love with people I love, and share that thing with you.

I’ve worked on some serious shows that operate like a business. I’ve worked on some shows that don’t even have publicity, they’re so content with just making content for a specific group of people. I’m aiming for somewhere in between with this; I want it to be a fun thing for queer lit lovers to discover, but nothing too serious.

Known to you as the tired, middle-aged titular character of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', Henry is now the tired, thirty-two-year-old titular character of our podcast! Having quit - or maybe been fired from, he can't quite remember - his job as a biochemical researcher, Henry now dedicates his time to performing hazardous experiments on himself, pondering morality, and figuring out where he stands on 'romantic feelings'.
