The Wrong Warden, Ch. 136
Chapter 136: The Proving A decision is made, and Hera enters the Proving to throw her support behind Lord Harrowmont.
“I don’t see how we can support Behlen.” Wynne’s voice is filled with the heat of her anger, and Hera can see little sparks coming off her fingertips every few minutes. “He had Prince Trian killed, framed his younger brother Duren for the deed, and exiled him into the Deep Roads as punishment!”
“But Wynne, he will end the dwarves’ isolation,” Leliana reminds her. “Give the casteless a chance to better themselves. They could join the army.”
“ And he will break some of this stodgy tradition- like this stalemate,” Zevran adds.
“And what will Harrowmont do? Keep them in the mountain?” Morrigan asks, pacing. “He is a traditionalist, he will not change Orzammar in his lifetime.”
Hera watches the debate silently, arms folded over her chest. She and Alistair had discovered that Behlen’s papers to discredit Harrowmont were fakes, and the Shaper had agreed to look into the matter for them. As for what she’d heard of Harrowmont, he seemed a decent enough fellow, intending to lead the dwarves in the same traditions they’d followed for centuries- a direct challenge to Behlen’s progressive attitude.
They’ll never make a decision, she thinks, watching Alistair argue for Behlen- that was surprising, as he was so keen to avoid the crown waiting for his own head. Behlen wants to make changes, an admirable trait, but not something I can use right now. He would throw Orzammar into chaos trying to make change happen quickly. If he honors our treaty, his casteless would put inexperienced men against the darkspawn- are extra blades worth it? Behlen is the one who started the brawl when we entered the city… Aggressive. If he would kill both his brothers, will he try to fight me over the treaty? Or just send me green casteless instead of good, blooded soldiers?
